Occupational Therapy in Carlisle Public Schools

What is OT?  The profession of Occupational Therapy is concerned with a person’s ability to participate in desired daily life activities or “occupations.”  A School-based Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) is a highly trained professional who is experienced in assessing and treating:  Fine motor skills  Visual-motor and visual-perceptual skills  Handwriting and keyboarding  Sensory Processing  Activities of Daily Living as related to school participation

Education and Credentials  Post-professional Masters degrees in Occupational Therapy.  Completion of course work inclusive of:  Human Growth and Development across the lifespan  Human Anatomy and Physiology (with lab)  Statistics  Neurology and Neuroanatomy  Sociology and Psychology  Pathology  Successful completion of a minimum of 32 weeks of supervised clinical internship.

Requirements to Practice  Certification by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) after successful completion of national competency exam.  Maintaining certification is contingent on successful completion of a minimum of 36 contact hours (continuing education) every 3 years.  Massachusetts state OT licensure with requirements for professional development hours to maintain currency.

OT services in the school  Direct service:  Provided to enable students to access the curriculum, participate, and make effective progress.  Services take place in the general education setting when possible.  Consultation:  Scheduled weekly or bi-weekly meetings with teachers and team members to assist the student in achieving his/her education goals.  Modification:  A change to the general education curriculum or other material being taught.  Accommodation:  A support or service provided to help the student to fully access the general education curriculum or subject matter.
