The National IOR Centre of Norway The National IOR Centre of Norway Merete Vadla Madland OG21 Forum 2013 Radisson Blu Plaza Hotell, Oslo, December 4, 2013 The National IOR Centre

The National IOR Centre of Norway “Norway oil minister wants increased extraction research”, (SA ) ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT “Today's average recovery rate of 46 percent is good, but we can still do far better! The new research centre will help us develop the necessary technology and knowledge to do it,” he explains.

The National IOR Centre of Norway A need for IOR on NCS  Government identified need for increasing recovery from oil fields on Norwegian continental shelf (NCS) – 1 % more oil ~ 325 billion NOK  2010: Committee of experts to suggest measures, led by Knut Åm  2010: Åm presented report suggesting 44 measures for improving the oil recovery; one was a National IOR Centre  2011: Ministry of Petroleum and Energy evaluated the Norwegian petroleum activities; recommended the establishment of a research centre in the field of improved recovery, based on an open competition  2013, February: The application for the National IOR Centre was announced by the Research Council of Norway  2013, May: 3 applications to host the Centre by the application deadline:  Bergen – Uni Research and UiB  Trondheim – SINTEF/NTNU  Stavanger – UiS-IRIS and IFE 3

The National IOR Centre of Norway Stavanger site of new petroleum research centre announced by MPE 30th of August

The National IOR Centre of Norway The aim  The Centre's goal is to contribute to maximizing oil recovery on the Norwegian Continental Shelf  Research and development for field implementation  Environmentally friendly technologies 5 Source: Norwegian Petroleum Directorate

The National IOR Centre of Norway  Consortium  The 3 research partners UiS-IRIS and IFE, and the user partners (oil & service companies; Schlumberger and Halliburton)  Host institution - UiS  Centre lifetime & budget  5+3 years ( )  Expected total budget from RCN: 80 MNOK  Yearly budget: 40+ MNOK (RCN 10 MNOK, UiS 10 MNOK, Industry 20+ MNOK)  Industry partner cost: 2 MNOK/year 6

The National IOR Centre of Norway An open Centre structure  National and international collaborations  Individual professors and their research groups at UiB, NTNU, UiO, ISEI (Japan), DTU (Denmark)  Agreements with institutions in The Netherlands (TNO, TU Delft), Denmark (GEO, GEUS), and universities in USA (Cornell University, Texas A&M)  Secure broad national involvement  Yearly open IOR workshops/conferences in Stavanger  Form a true base for the IOR competence in Norway  Close cooperation with oil and service companies  Work focused towards application  Access to experience and data gained by industry

The National IOR Centre of Norway Successful cooperation – operators, service industry and research institutions The EOR Field pilot test: Na-Silicate water diversion at the Snorre field  Cooperation: Statoil – Halliburton – IRIS  Objective:  Improve the oil production from old offshore field  Diversion of injected water to unswept areas  Using chemicals that are environmentally acceptable  Qualification at IRIS:  Laboratory tests  Gelation kinetics  Particle size during gelation  Injectivity of silicate  Gel strength in porous media  Controlled location of gel plug in sandstone  Field test design

The National IOR Centre of Norway IOR competence, UiS-IRIS and IFE FOCUS: SUBSURFACE AND RESERVOIR  EOR – 30 years continuous experience Modeling – experiments Rock-fluid interactions Injection technologies (water/gas based) Pore, core and field scale Sandstone – carbonate  Reservoir characterization – field scale evaluation Development of reservoir simulation tools History matching and reservoir simulation models (ensemble Kalman filter - EnKF) Production optimization Tracer technology; unique information about flow characteristics in reservoirs Field studies

The National IOR Centre of Norway  IOR research programs  JCR (1980-)  RUTH/SPOR-programs ( )  COREC ( )  Education  petroleum education since 1971; PhD education since 1994; autumn new 2 yrs MSc with emphasis on IOR-EOR  Proximity of industry, operating petroleum authorities (NPD, Petoro), and academia/research in Stavanger IOR competence, UiS-IRIS and IFE

The National IOR Centre of Norway Development of new injection methods & improvements of existing recovery methods  Theme 1: Mobile and immobile oil and EOR methods Focus: Development of a core to field program  Core scale experiments  optimal EOR fluids that will improve the recovery  Upscaling of core scale results to the field scale  Nano and pore scale investigations of reservoir cores  understanding of the recovery mechanism, field scale optimization  Theme 2: Reservoir characterization to improve volumetric sweep Focus: Identify how to flood a specific field most efficiently  Integrate all available field data into reservoir simulation models  Simulate flooding scenarios in specific fields  Themes 1 & 2:  Close collaboration with the service industry and operators  Access to field data for evaluation of the new methods developed in the Centre  Evaluation of environmental and economical impact for offshore implementation 11

The National IOR Centre of Norway Low Hanging Fruits ( ):  Pre-screening analyses  Coarse description of reservoirs that would serve as a reference for more detailed studies  Optimized water injection  Smart water injection in chalk and Low salinity injection in sandstone  Project I: Core scale interpretation model  Geochemistry, interactions oil/brines/minerals  Two phase, Pc, hysteresis models  Project 2: Upscaling from core to field  Streamlines from commercial tools (ECLIPSE, STARS, etc)  Coupled approach  Project 3: Special EOR core analysis handbook  Smart water & Low sal

The National IOR Centre of Norway Education, research training and recruitment  Research training of doctoral and post doctoral fellows are crucial  20 PhDs/6 postdocs during the 8 year period  Female PhD/postdocs > 40%  The research and research training should lead to research-based teaching at MSc level in the same subject areas  The 2 years MSc in IOR-EOR (starts autumn 2013) closely integrates with ongoing 2 years MSc in Petroleum Geoscience Engineering  50 graduates/yr from the MSc programs  Education and placement of MSc students and PhD/postdocs into industry organization  Exposure to IOR/EOR relevant issues  Improved recruitment of future industry expert personnel with innovative and up-to-date IOR knowledge  Joint educational activities and plans for competence building measures  The Centre together with The Petroleum Research School of Norway will impact petroleum education in terms of recruitment, quality, number of candidates and international cooperation 13
