AP CHEMISTRY unit 1: Chemistry Fundamentals

Intro to AP Chemistry September 3 & 4th, 2015 ■Summer Assignment Turn In ■Syllabus ■Check out text books ■Safety Contract ■Test Information ■Calendar ■Start Preassessment /Summer Quiz

Syllabus Read through the Syllabus tonight and me any questions that you have Items of note: ■I recommend purchasing an AP Chemistry review book for you to keep at home ■You will need some form of lab notebook- a bound record of experiments. College admissions officers will sometimes ask to see your lab notebook in order to award credit ■There will be changes that need to occur to the details in the syllabus - I will try to keep you as up to date as possible! But lets all be flexible

Safety Contract- signed page due tomorrow ■Read and sign the safety contract ■Have your parents/guardians read and sign the safety contract ■There is also a place on the contract to indicate that you and your family have read the syllabus

Information on the AP Exam ■Exam Date: May 2, 2016 ■Format of Exam Section IFORMAT Number of Questions60 Time to Complete90 minutes Number of Choices4 CalculatorNo Weighting50% Section II (FRQ)FORMAT Number of Questions7 Total 3 long questions and 4 short questions Point ValueUp to 46 points Time to Complete90 minutes Number of Choices4 CalculatorYes Weighting50%

Summer Assignment Quiz & Preassessment

Wednesday – September 9 th, 2015 ■Objective: –Complete the pre-lab and read procedure completely for lab tomorrow ■Warm-up: –Calculate the molar mass of Calcium Chloride

Thursday – September 10, 2015 All bags and personal items need to be on or under the center tables. Take your lab notebook, procedure, and a pencil or pen to your table. Tables 1, 2, 3, 4 will be using unknown acid A Tables 5, 6, 7, 8 will be using unknown acid B Lab with Post Lab Questions due Monday

Problem Set 1

For Friday’s Quiz ■Nomenclature: Naming Ionic Compounds, Naming Ionic Compounds with Transition Metals, Naming Ionic Compounds with Polyatomic Ions, Naming Covalent Compounds, Naming Acids ■Average Atomic Mass ■Molar Mass Calculations

Friday – September 11, 2015 Problem Set 1 Due Quiz 1 Start Percent Composition / Percent Yield Practice Next Week: Empirical Formulas, Percent Composition, Review Limiting Reactant, Gravimetric Analysis, Quiz 2

Friday – September 11, 2015 Today: Review Problem Set #1 Quiz 1 Review Percent Composition & Percent Yield Start Percent Composition / Percent Yield Practice Next Week: Empirical Formulas, Combustion Analysis, Review Limiting Reactant, Gravimetric Analysis, Quiz 2(Friday)

Problem Set #1 Review ■Naming Ionic Compounds (Positive Ion + Negative Ion) –Binary: First Element Second Element+ide Example: NaBr Sodium Bromide –Polyatomic: First Element Polyatomic Ion Example: NaOH Sodium Hydroxide –Transition Metal: First Element (Roman Numeral of Charge) Second Element+ide Example: CoCl 3 Cobalt (III) Chloride Example: Fe(OH) 2 Iron (II) Hydroxide

Problem Set #1 Review ■Naming Covalent Compounds (non metals) –Prefix+First Element Prefix+Second Element * never use mono for first element Example: CO 2 Carbon dioxide B 2 Br 4 diboron tetrabromide ■Naming Acids -Binary Acids: first word has prefix hydro+ root name of non-metal+ic second word is acid Example: HCl Hydrochloric acid -Acids with Polyatomic Ions: suffix –ate turns to –ic / -ite turns to –ous second word is acid Example: H 2 SO 4 Sulfuric acid Example: H 2 SO 3 Sulfurous acid

Problem Set Review ■Average atomic Mass –Average atomic mass is the mass of [each isotope multiplied by its abundance] added together ■Molar Mass –Mass of each element in the compound added together

Percent Yield Percent Composition

Monday – September 14, 2015 Due Today: Lab – Mass / Mole Percent Composition / Percent Yield Future Due Dates: Problem Set 2: Friday 9/18 Quiz 2: Friday 9/18 Test 1: Monday 9/21 ■Learning Target: –Calculate Molecular and Empirical Formulas AP Standard 1.A.2.b: “Chemical Analysis provides a method for determining the relative number of atoms in a substance which can be used to identify the substance or determine its purity. “

Review Law of Definite Proportions ■A compound is always composed of the same elements at fixed proportions by mass Sample Problem: Sodium chloride, NaCl, contains 39% Na (sodium) and 61% Cl (chloride) by mass. If you have a 150-g sample of NaCl, how many grams of sodium and chloride are there in the sample? To check your answer, the sum of the total number of grams of sodium and chloride should be equal to 150 grams. Law of Multiple Proportions ■When two elements combine to form more than one compound, the mass of one element, which combines with a fixed mass of the other element, will always be ratios of whole numbers.

Tuesday – September 15, 2015 Today: Check in quiz on Empirical Formulas Future Due Dates: Problem Set 2: Friday 9/18 Quiz 2: Friday 9/18 Test 1: Monday 9/21 ■Learning Target: –Combustion Analysis AP Standard 1.A.2.b: “Chemical Analysis provides a method for determining the relative number of atoms in a substance which can be used to identify the substance or determine its purity. “ Lab 2: Gravimetric Analysis Pre-Lab Wednesday Lab Thursday Post Lab Calculations Friday Write up due Monday
