3 What is Storage Device A storage device is any computing hardware that is used for storing, porting and extracting data files and objects. It can hold and store information both temporarily and permanently, and can be internal or external to a computer, server or any similar computing device. Storage devices are one of the core components of any computing device. They store virtually all the data and applications on a computer, except hardware firmware. They are available in different form factors depending on the type of underlying device.

4 Types of Storage Device Primary Storage Devices: Generally smaller in size, are designed to hold data temporarily and are internal to the computer. They have the fastest data access speed, and include RAM and cache memory. Secondary Storage Devices: These usually have large storage capacity, and they store data permanently. They can be both internal and external to the computer, and they include the hard disk, compact disk drive and USB storage device.

5 RAM (random access memory) is the place in a computer where the operating system, application programs, and data in current use are kept so that they can be quickly reached by the computer's processor. What is Ram Types of RAM DDR SDRAM DRAM

6 Brief discussion on ROM ROM is "built-in" computer memory containing data that normally can only be read, not written to. ROM contains the programming that allows your computer to be "booted up" or regenerated each time you turn it on. What Is ROM?

7 USES of ROM –stores critical programs –ROMs are used extensively in calculators –peripheral devices such as laser printers, whose fonts are often stored in ROMs. Type of ROM Programmable read-only memory (PROM) Erasable programmable read-only memory (EPROM) Electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM)

8 1. RAM is the short form of random access memory 1. ROM is the short form of read only memory 2. if something is written it can be edited whenever the user wants to. 2.once anything is written, it cant be erased. 3. A ROM chip is used primarily in the start up process of a computer 3. RAM chip is used in the normal operations of a computer after starting up and loading the operating system. 4. Writing data to a ROM chip is a slow process 4. writing data to a RAM chip is a faster process. 5. A RAM chip can store multiple gigabytes (GB) of data, up to 16 GB or more per chip 5. A ROM chip typically stores only several megabytes (MB) of data, up to 4 MB or more per chip. 6. RAM requires a flow of electricity to retain data (e.g. the computer powered on). 6. ROM will retain data without the flow of electricity (e.g. when computer is powered off RAMROM

Modern Day Storage Devices SanDisk Ultra Fit USB Store up to 64GB is something not much bigger than your fingernail.

Modern Day Storage Devices VisionTek USB Pocket SSD 240GB 10 Thev visionTek USB looks like any other high-capacity flash drive with a USB 3.0 connector, but on the inside it is a full- blown Solid State Drive (SSD) featuring a high-performance SandForce controller. Yes, this is a pocketable SSD.

Modern Day Storage Devices Sandisk Extreme 900 portable 11 Time is money. With up to 9x faster transfer speeds than an external hard drive and twice the speed of other SSDs. Its space is 1.92 TB
