Agenda Discuss the importance of energy efficiency in the built environment Explore what is happening in industry – how industry is responding to the growing need for and interest in energy efficient construction Identify what this means for our course delivery – where are we already delivering EE principles? Brainstorm ideas for developing our own awareness so that we can better inform our students Agenda for today…

How our industry is transitioning Standard Practices Energy Efficient Practices Net-Zero Energy Practices

What is energy efficiency? Working in groups, discuss and respond to the question: How has the shift towards energy efficiency impacted the construction and property services sector?

Energy efficiency Energy Efficiency … the construction and operation of buildings using the least amount of energy for the most gain …it is fast becoming a global concern with major governments providing incentives to businesses and consumers …minimum standards contained in the National Construction Code

The building science approach to energy efficiency

People energy costs durability concerns indoor air quality how occupants will use the building Health & safety – e.g. allergies, asthma Environment climate prevailing wind patterns average rainfalls emissions waste management water conservation Building orientation number of rooms and living spaces materials used deconstruction renewable moisture management heat and air flows The building science approach considers the interaction between:

High performance buildings High performance building – low cost.

High performance buildings High performance building – high cost

Energy efficiency Building science The building envelope Heat, air and moisture flows Moisture management Ventilation

What factors compromise the tightness of the building envelope? Air leakages through: Down lights Heating and cooling vents Gaps in insulation Gaps under eaves

Moisture management Moisture can be caused by poor ventilation, weather, indoor use of structure, groundwater, evaporative air-conditioning units etc. Design to keep moisture out Allow for moisture to escape

Heat and air flow throughout the building Air barriers, such as insulation, are needed to create a thermal boundary The thermal boundary can be compromised

HVAC – Maintenance Air filters Time clocks Outlets Pumps

Controlled Ventilation To circulate indoor air To remove unwanted moisture To improve indoor air quality To control heat and air flows and therefore control indoor air temperatures and maintain comfort

Your task How are we currently representing the importance of energy efficiency to our students? Are there energy efficient techniques or ways of working that we could begin to introduce? What are the barriers to us increasing the energy efficiency focus in the courses we deliver? What ideas can I offer for removing those barriers?

Summary The importance of the role we play in developing awareness and skills in energy efficiency The many opportunities we each have to play our part in increasing energy efficiency awareness and skills The challenges we each face but the importance of looking for alternative solutions and things we can do rather than what we cannot do yet…

Take aways…? Outcomes from today One thing you learned or will take away from today One thing you will do differently in your delivery or assessment of students
