Love fades away as time goes by

Love fades away as the person ages How? (how can we prove this) The Poem is divide into two parts His remembrances of his past love (describes love as “sweet”. His pain, suffering and desire towards love

Came out in 1923 in his book called New hampshire Was 52 at the time-old enough to speak about love “In 1895, Frost married Elinor Miriam White, who became a major inspiration in his poetry until her death in 1938” () Most of Frost’s poems were talked about how “life associated with nature” () Rare to find Frost talking about love. “The author of searching and often dark meditations on universal themes, he is a quintessentially modern poet in his adherence to language as it is actually spoken, in the psychological complexity of his portraits, and in the degree to which his work is infused with layers of ambiguity and irony”

Structure=remembrance + desire 1 st part of the poem Uses words as “lived”, “had”, and “seemed”- indicate past tense. Our theory- only does he remember but also desires to regain the sweetness of love Description of love- “sweet”

2 nd part of the poem: the poem’s divide mark could be said to be at line 20. Starting with “NOW” referring to present Changes tone Changes mood from “sweet” to “bitter” Now desires love

“the hurt is not enough” (29) Theory How wants to feel more pain? why? We believe he experience pain when he loved. He rejected it. But is willing to experience greater pain to receive more love. if that what it takes. “Sweet of bitter bark and burning clove” (23-24) Theory- Bark is not sweet-speak from experience Is trying to find that “sweetness” Burning clove are extremely to Sweet Like an alcoholic how seeks stronger substances “The petal of the rose/it was the stung” Theory- Desire to feel pain again. If it means to love again. Petal is soft and smooth- soothing sensation But at the same time needs love Or is willing to take pain May be he was hart

“When stiff and sore and scarred”(25) This phrase is hard to pronounce. Makes the reader slow down. Purpose is to think about the sentence Polysyndeton= use of “and” and the alliteration combined.

“I lived on air that crossed me from sweet things”(3-4) I imagine a boy coming up into a cross wind. Smelling the air. May me he had multiple loves. “I had the swirl and ache from sprays of honeysuckle that when they’re gathered shake dew on the knuckle”. (8-12) This poem has many examples of imagery Swirl and ache=Butterfly affect Honeysuckle= sweet sent “shake dew on the knuckle”= water on you knukle
