Periodic Table Presentations “If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.” By Christina Fortuna and Jennifer Gibbons 10 th grade Chemistry Introduction - In this project we are going to explore the periodic table. Each group (4-5 students) will be exploring a different family of the table: Alkali Metals, Alkaline Earth Metals, Transition Metals, Halogen Gases, or Noble Gases. Each member will be assigned a role of either : Researchers (1-2), Writer, or Presenters (2).

Task As discussed preciously in class there are 5 different families of the periodic table: Alkali Metals, Alkaline Earth Metals, Transition Metals, Halogen Gases, or Noble Gases. In groups you will do research on your assigned group, make a presentation about the qualities specific to your group, and present the information to the class. table.png

Roles Researchers (1-2)- Your job is to look up the elemental family you are assigned. You are responsible for recording information about each element in the family (including atomic mass and number). Writer- You are the creative one you get to organize the PowerPoint and place all the information from your researcher (2) to where it can be easily be seen by the class. Presenters (2)- You are the spokes people you get to take the work that the researchers and writers have done and let it shine. You do need to know some background information no student should be reading directly off the PowerPoint so be sure to work with your group members. qtplvU7nS1qk56l4o1_400.jpg

Process The following is a short example of the steps you may need to follow to complete the webquest. 1. You will be assigned a group and a role: researcher, writer or presenter. 2. Begin to research to do research with the three days in class assigned to work on this project (if more time is needed arrange to meet outside the classroom). 3. Discuss what you want to include in the PowerPoint with the writer taking extensive notes on what should be put in the PowerPoint. 4. As a group begin to create PowerPoint, using only key words! 5. Begin rehearsing for the presentation (presenters)! Do not read off the PowerPoint, you will be marked down otherwise. Examples of information to find: Characteristics of the family assigned Number of valence electrons Chemical and physical properties of the family

Group Evaluation These will be handed out after your presentation

Conclusion Hopefully after completing this project you will be able to fully understand each of the families in the periodic table. This information will also help you remember different elements for the feature by similar qualities. After the presentations please write down three things you learned from your classmates and hand it the day after the presentations.
