Career Research Activity By: Edson Stewart

Introduction  All of our materials processing classes are revolved not only around developing skills but actual professions.  Many of these career fields are overlooked, in this next assignment you and one other person are going to research and create a presentation on a career.

Tasks  You will have to find as much information about the career that you have selected (from a given list) and create a 3-5 minute presentation.  The following topics should be discussed in your presentation: - job description - education or training required - Job setting and type of work (i.e. Are they working inside or outside, are the doing physical labor or not. Be sure to explain!) -Income levels, health benefits, and retirement -Occupational outlook

Process Step 1: Select a partner or work individually Step 2: Select a career of interest from the list if it is not already taken. Step 3: Research the career you have chosen and answer the questions using the websites on the next slide. Step 4: Create your presentation Step 5: Give your presentation Step 6: Listen to other presentations and take notes.

Helpful Resources  Occupational Outlook Handbook This site discusses many different careers it gives job descriptions, salary, education, working conditions and outlook.  Career One Stop This site informs you about what careers are growing. What average salaries are and where the career is going in the future.

Evaluation  This activity is worth 100 points  Answering the different topics on the tasks page is worth 50 points.  Presenting the information is worth 30 points.  Good classroom behavior and staying on task is worth 20

Evaluation Points Explained  Each of the 5 topics listed under the tasks slide is worth 10 points. If you fully describe the topic in you presentation you will receive 10 points. If you give a partial answer you will receive 5 points, and if you chose not to discuss the topic you will receive 0 points for that topic.  30 points will be awarded if your presentation meets the time requirement and is delivered in a professional manner. If you only meet one of those two requirements you will lose 15 points. If you are missing both, you will not receive credit for this section.  The last 20 points are based on your research behavior. If you or your group chooses to surf the web instead of doing research you will lose 5 points each time I have to remind you to get back on task.

Conclusion  At the end of this activity you should have a better understanding of how the skills learned in this class apply to different professions.  You should be able to explain at least 4 different careers.  Do good research and pay attention to the other presentations. Who knows you might be learning about your future.
