Urine Monitoring System (UMS) ISS UMS is a redesigned version of the Shuttle UMS

The ISS UMS is a successor design to the existing Shuttle UMS. –This re-design is hoped to resolve anomalies experienced with the previous shuttle UMS system: liquid carry-over, inaccurate void volume measurements, and cross contamination in void samples. It interfaces with the Russian ACY waste collection system in Node 3. It allows for the measurement of volume of each urine void and has the capability to acquire samples for stowage and subsequent analysis. The UMS can be used to facilitate non-invasive methods for monitoring crew health, evaluation of countermeasures, and reduce the need for blood samples. What is the ISS UMS?

Hardware Overview ISS Urine Monitoring System Mechanical Module –Sample identification using built-in barcode reader Hoses and Cables –Urine Monitoring System Effluent Urinal Hose –Urine Monitoring System Flush Water Hose –Urine Monitoring Primary Urinal Hose –Urine Monitoring System Interface Cable ISS provided (on-board resources) –Space Station Computer o Loaded with UMS software o No dedicated UMS laptop o Data recording and display of volume o All information is encrypted for downlink –A31p 28V DC Power Supply –A31p 16V DC Power Cable

ISS UMS installed in WHC

In-flight Operations UMS Checkout – Performed post-launch (19A) and post-installation of WHC into Node 3 (manifested on 20A) to verify functional/science requirements. – Consists of a validation sequence and nominal usage sequence 1) Validation: a bank of pre-filled syringes are injected into the UMS and samples are collected for return to Earth for analyses. 2) Nominal use: subjects collect two urine samples (one frozen, one ambient) from all voids for two days. Return samples to ground for evaluation of machine functionality only. – Samples and validation syringes will be returned on a later flight.

UMS Validation Ops UMS Validation Kit: 39 Syringes (2 control syringes) Filled with either Pseudo-Urine (high/medium/low reagent variants) or Distilled Water Note: Pseudo-Urine is a Tox Lvl 0. Validation Activities: 1.UMS Software will prompt the crew to inject the contents of the UMS Validation Syringes into the system via the UMS Urine Funnel. 2.Once the system takes the measurements, it will prompt the user to draw samples using a Preserved Syringe and/or a Frozen Syringe. 3.Frozen Syringes will be placed in MELFI, Preserved Syringes will be returned to the Preserved Syringe Kit. The Validation Sample Syringes will be saved and returned on a later flight.

Cycle 1ACycle 1BCycle 2ACycle 2BCycle 2C Validation Syringes Each Validation segment uses a specific combination and different # of Validation Syringes.

UMS Nominal Ops Crew will take two samples: - One Frozen - One Preserved If void is too small to collect two samples - Take one Frozen *Covered in Crew Training* Crew will take two samples: - One Frozen - One Preserved If void is too small to collect two samples - Take one Frozen *Covered in Crew Training*

Procedures URINE MONITORING SYSTEM ASSEMBLY - Unpack it - Set it up - Connect all the hoses and cables URINE MONITORING SYSTEM DISASSEMBLY - Disconnect all the hoses and cables - Take everything down - Pack it up URINE MONITORING SYSTEM VALIDATION SEQUENCE - Turn everything on (SSC, Mechanical Module, ACY) - Follow Software Instructions - Turn ACY and Mechanical Module off (15 min. ACY cool-down) - Continue Validation sequence until segment complete… - Turn everything off (SSC, MM, ACY) and stow samples URINE MONITORING SYSTEM CHECKOUT URINE SAMPLE COLLECTION - Turn everything on (SSC, MM, ACY) - Follow Software Instructions - Turn everything off (SSC, MM, ACY) and stow samples Standard Assembly Standard Assembly Standard Disassembly Standard Disassembly One-Time Validation [5 sequences] One-Time Validation [5 sequences] After Checkout This becomes a Nominal Urine Collection After Checkout This becomes a Nominal Urine Collection

UMS Software Inject Validation Syringe (example) (grayed out while operating) - Validation Mode - Micturation Mode (“Urinate,” aka: Nominal) - Maintenance Mode (grayed out while operating) - Validation Mode - Micturation Mode (“Urinate,” aka: Nominal) - Maintenance Mode Constraint: ACY fan cannot run continuously for longer than 30min. Must break for 15 min. for fan motor to cool-down before continuing. *Software has a built-in timer to account for this and pre-set stopping points*

UMS Software Start Micturition Designed to accept voids up to 1000ml.

Safety Urine spillage is to be cleaned with wet wipes and disposed in wet trash –Supplies in Validation Kit Water and moisture controls: –UMS Hardware: When not in use, hardware covers will be provided to protect from free water –SSC Laptop: Covers may be provided by program, or remove laptop from WHC prior to free water exposure
