What guidelines, concerning copyright laws should be used in the classroom?

In the United States, copyright law protects the authors of "original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works."

 Up to 10% of a copyrighted musical composition, but no more than 30 seconds  Up to 10% of a body of sound recording, but no more than 30 seconds  Any alterations cannot change the basic melody or the fundamental character of the work

 Text  Up to 10% of a copyrighted work or 1000 words, whichever is less  Poems  Entire poem if less than 250 words  250 words or less if longer poem  No more than 5 poems (or excerpts) of different poets, from an anthology  Only 3 poems (or excerpts) per poet

 Up to 10% of a copyrighted work or 3 minutes, whichever is less  Clip cannot be altered in any way

 Educators and students must credit sources, giving full bibliographic information when available.  Educators and students must display the copyright notice and copyright ownership information if this is shown in the original source.

 Fair use is generally a short excerpt and almost always attributed.  Fair use is a complex doctrine meant to allow certain valuable social purposes. One example is education.  When using created materials in an educational setting, fair use is part of a web of authority we rely on to use others' works.

 What is the character of the use?  What is the nature of the work to be used?  How much of the work will you use?  What effect would this use have on the market for the original or for permissions if the use were widespread?  After asking these questions, make a judgment about the final balance: overall does the balance tip in favor of fair use or in favor of getting permission?

 In the 90s USA commercial copyright violation involving more than 10 copies and value over $2500 was made a felony.

 Be careful  Be honest  Be respectful  Be responsible
