How to Install a New Car Starter By Cole Johnston In this slideshow you will learn how to properly and safely install a new car starter.

Why Might a Car Starter Fail ? When you turn the key the battery gives a jump to the starter, which turns on the flywheel and gets your engine going. But this piece of your car can cause more problems than many other moving parts. So how do you fix it? If your car is making a grinding noise when you try to start it, there might be something broken in the starter.

What You’ll Need to Do The Job Oil Change 3:00 In order to get to your starter you might have to lift your vehicle up on a jack. In order to do this put the jack under your car somewhere with a large surface area and start pumping it. It is Also a good idea to use jack stand, which are much more safe. If you aren’t very familiar with cars and how they work it’s a good idea to get somebody to be there with you well your working on it. You never know what’s going to happen, you might loose grip of the starter and it will land on your head. The tools you need for this are pretty standard, you’ll need a ratchet, jack and a screwdriver to unhook the battery.

What To Do Before Hand Oil Change 3:00  The most important thing you need to do before you unhook the starter is disconnect the positive battery terminal. If you don’t do this you could you could short circuit the terminals that that power the starter, causing the car to attempt to start, and sparks will go everywhere.  Some extra tips you might want to do are find out what size of bolt the starter has. This will reduce the running back and forth from the car to the tool box and make the job easier.  You will also want to have already bought your new starter and have it out of the box, ready to go.

Uninstalling a Starter Oil Change 3:00 First you will have to disconnect two sets of wires running from the battery. Find the two bolts holding them on and disconnect them with your wrench. After you have those two disconnected you’ll have to remove two more bigger bolts holding the starter in place. Take your wrench and unscrew them both out one at a time, when your loosening the second bolt make sure to have a firm grip on the starter, so it won’t fall and land on your head.

Reinstalling a Starter Oil Change 3:00 When you get your old starter out, it’s time to put the new one in. After you get back under your car with the new starter the first thing you’ll have to do is put the bigger bolts in place and tighten them up. After you have them both in place tighten them both up so the starter won’t move. Next step is to connect the two smaller cables and tighten them up.

Before Your Done Oil Change 3:00 Before you can go and try to start your car you’ll have to reconnect the positive battery cable. Another tip is don’t clean up your tools yet, if you don’t have everything hooked up right you will have to dig everything back out of your tool box and that’s wastes a lot of time.
