Presentation transcript:

 What are the very basic things a settlement needs to survive?

 Imagine you have just been given a piece of land the size of Salt Lake Valley.  Draw what the land looks like  Include:  Land features  Ideas for developing the land into the perfect community  Color your community!

 Title: Settling the Great Basin  Essential Question: How did the Mormon Pioneers set-up their new home in Utah?  You can put the “Summary Section” on page 148

 The Mormons set to work building homes, planting crops, and digging irrigation ditches  They also organized the land into a grid system  “Squares” in the center of the town were used for public buildings such as churches, stores and businesses  Mormons sent out missionaries to encourage converts to move to Utah to strengthen the settlements  They set up the Perpetual Emigration Fund to help converts pay for their move to Utah

 Brigham Young wanted the church to spread. He called people to go out and start new communities  New communities were started for many reasons:  As trading posts or temporary gathering places for new coverts  To produce iron, cotton and sugar or to raise cattle and sheep  As missions to Native American groups

 Mormon leaders were also interested in having political control.  They proposed a State of Deseret and appointed themselves as leaders of the new state The proposed State of Deseret included today’s Utah and Nevada as well as parts of Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, California, New Mexico & Oregon The Mormons petitioned Washington D.C. to become a state but were turned down

 The Compromise of 1850 determined that the land of today’s Utah and Nevada would become the Utah Territory and that this territory would be considered slave territory

 As a territory, Utah was mostly run by the federal government  U.S. President Fillmore appointed Brigham Young as governor of the Utah Territory
