White Helium The Ballooneers Caleb Scott Andrew

Purpose To code an Arduino to record data and transmit it back to our base station on the ground.

Materials Used A weather balloon GoPro 690 ft. of rope Arduino Fio and hardware Box, Zipties, Misc. Items

Day 1: Messing around with coding on an Arduino Uno and attaching sensors to it. Day 1: Learned to program with Arduino.

Day 2: Attached XBEE’s to our new Arduino Fios with the X-CTU program

Day 3: Experimenting with BMP-085, which records temperature, pressure, and altitude data. We had our first flight today! We also learned to solder.

Day 4: Adding serial call to balloons (Made the data collection more user- friendly) And we flew!

Day 5: Data capture with our balloons

Conclusion What did we learn? We learned how to wire an Arduino and code with an Arduino. We also learned how to wirelessly communicate with our balloons via XBEE and read XBEE data through X-CTU. We learned how to attach sensors and how to solder. We also interacted with Processing, another program to show our data from balloon.

Conclusion Cont. What surprised us? Temperature differences Wireless communications Height of the balloon

Conclusion Cont. What was the most frustrating aspect of the project? Making the XBEE’s work with the balloon Getting the string untangled Balloons colliding with other balloons in air Getting the Processing software to work
