Social Return On Investment

What is SROI? An innovative way to measure and account for the value that you create by your work Either ‘evaluative’ or ‘forecast’ The technique uses social accounting and cost benefit analysis to place a monetary value on outcomes

Why try to measure our impact? To understand the social, environmental, and economic value created by our work Maximise positive change and minimise possible negative outcomes Reconsider which stakeholders we should be working with

What are the main principles of SROI? 1.Involve stakeholders 2.Understand what changes 3.Value the things that matter 4.Only include what is material 5.Do not over claim 6.Be transparent 7.Verify the result

How do you do an SROI? 1.Establishing scope and identifying key stakeholders 2.Mapping outcomes 3.Evidencing outcomes and giving them a value 4.Establishing impact 5.Calculating the SROI 6.Reporting, using, embedding

Guess the definitions Impact Materiality Drop-off Deadweight Attribution Outputs

HCM’s SROI Why did we do one? How long did it take? What was the process? Who was involved? What did we learn? What was the value?

CouncilVolunteers Clients Carers/families NHS

An example - clients The changes: Receiving a regular nutritious meal Human contact - knowing someone will see them and check on them The outcomes: Improved happiness Improved health Feeling safer Feeling more secure Improved independence Increased ability to stay in my own home

A social impact? “Since having meals 7 days a week mother has been in much better health. She was 6.5 stone and now she is 9.5. She is also brighter and much more with it.” “They let me know if anything is wrong which gives me such peace of mind and I feel so much better for it.” “18 months ago my mum was hospitalised as a result of not eating properly – she is now back to full health, I’m sure as a result of your meals. Thank you so much”
