El Mundo Hispano Essential Question Where is Spanish spoken and what are these places like? GA Performance Standard MLC.CCC1A: Students demonstrate knowledge of geographical locations and identify major countries, cities, and geographical features of the places where the Target Language is spoken.

The Spanish-Speaking World  Spanish is spoken all around the world!  África  América del Norte  América del Sur  América Central  El Caribe  Europa

América del Sur (South America)  Most of the Spanish-speaking countries are in South America.  Not every country in South America speaks Spanish as an official language.  Can you think of any countries in South America where Spanish is spoken?

Argentina (ar-hen-tee-nah)  Capital: Buenos Aires

Bolivia (bo-lee-vee-ah)  Capital: La Paz AND Sucre

Chile (chee-lay)  Capital: Santiago

Colombia (ko-lohm-bee-ah)  Capital: Bogotá

Ecuador (eh-kwah-dor)  Capital: Quito

Paraguay (pah-ra-gwy)  Capital: Asunción

Perú (pay-roo)  Capital: Lima

Uruguay (ooh-roo-gwy)  Capital: Montevideo

América Central (Central America)  The second highest number of Spanish-speaking countries is in Central America.  There is only ONE country where Spanish is not the official language: BELIZE  Can you think of any countries in Central America where Spanish is spoken?

Costa Rica (ko-stah-ree-ka)  Capital: San José

Guatemala (gwah-tay-mah-lah)  Capital: Ciudad de Guatemala (Guatemala City)

Honduras (own-du-rahs)  Capital: Tegucigalpa

Nicaragua (nee-ka-rah-gwah)  Capital: Managua

Panamá (pah-nah-MAH)  Capital: Ciudad de Panamá (Panama City)

El Salvador (el-sahl-va-dor)  Capital: San Salvador

América del Norte (North America)  Of the three countries in North America, Spanish is only the official language of one.  What do you think it is? M ÉXICO!  Although Spanish is widely spoken all across the United States (Los Estados Unidos), it is not an official language.  What is the official language of Los Estados Unidos? TRICK QUESTION: There isn’t an official language!

México (MEH-hee-ko)  Capital: México, D.F. (Distrito Federal)

El Caribe (The Caribbean)  There are three countries in the Caribbean where Spanish is spoken as an official language.  What do you think those three countries are?  Cuba  Puerto Rico  La República Dominicana

Puerto Rico (pwehr-toe-ree-ko)  Capital: San Juan

La República Dominicana (la-reh-POO-blee-ka-doh-mee-nee-KAH-nah)  Capital: Santo Domingo

Europa (Europe)  There is only one country in Europe where Spanish is the official language. What is it?  Hint: It is the place where Spanish first originated.  España!
