German Expressionism German expressionism was more connected to relationships between art and society, politics and popular culture The Avant-Garde artists tried to free themselves from state restrictions They dreamed of utopian dreams involving individual creativity, but want to still reach the general population The German expressionists were concerned about keeping their individuality while still attending to the masses The term “Expressionism” in Germany meant “Modern art”. There was a rejection of traditional Western conventions dating back to the Renaissance.
