UC Open Access Policy (adopted July 24, 2013) The policy adopted by the Academic Senate reserves rights for the faculty to make their articles freely available to the public in an open access repository. The policy grants a copyright license to the University that survives regardless of any later agreements authors may make with publishers. (see ) 3UC Open Access Policy & UC Publication Management System

Benefits of [UC] Open Access [Policy] Increases readers’ ability to find and use relevant literature Increases the visibility, readership and impact of authors’ works Accelerates the pace of research, discovery and innovation Creates new avenues for discovery in digital environment (Google) Provides access to crucial STEM materials Contributes to core mission of advancing knowledge by democratizing access across all institutions – regardless of size or budget 4UC Open Access Policy & UC Publication Management System

UC Open Access Policy – Moving Forward Provide an electronic copy of faculty’s final version or post-print of the article to the UC Provide link if article is freely available in another repository or as an open-access publication Include choices, such as waiver/embargo, but still may deposit article for archival purposes More info located at The University of California has notified over 200 publishers about the Open Access Policy adopted by UC faculty. 200 publishers 5UC Open Access Policy & UC Publication Management System

A waiver opts out of the policy completely for a particular article. The author’s rights are then limited to what is allowed by the publication agreement s/he signs with the publisher. An embargo delays public access to an article in eScholarship until a chosen time period has elapsed after its publication. The author retains rights, but choses to execute them later.
