Presentation transcript:

Section 2.1 Organization and Relationships

Organization in Ecology organism: smallest level (one) population: group of organisms of one species that live together community: group of interacting populations ecosystem: communities and abiotic factors (environment) biome: group of ecosystems with similar characteristics; can be found in different parts of the world biosphere: area supports life around Earth

Relationships in Ecology Symbiosis: relationships among organisms of different species mutualism: both species benefit from interaction commensalism: one species benefits, the other is neither harmed nor helped parasitism: one species benefits by harming the other species but usually doesn’t kill it predator-prey: NOT symbiotic, one species kills and eats the other species

What kind of relationship is this? Egret: eats grasshoppers and other insects displaced by other animals Acacia plant, ants, and caterpillar: ants drink nectar from caterpillar, caterpillar feeds off acacia plant, and ants protect acacia plant from harmful organisms Clown fish cleans sea anemone and sea anemone provides habitat and protection for clown fish Isopod feeds on soldierfish’s body tissues
