World War Two The Allies Advance

German Domination 1942

The Allies Advance Coalition was formed by Great Britain, the USSR, and the U.S. called the Grand Alliance. The three nations agreed to focus on military operations and ignore political differences. They agreed to fight until Germany, Italy, and Japan surrendered unconditionally.

The German War Machine in 1942 In 1942 Germany was fighting against Britain in Western Europe, the USSR in Eastern Europe, and in North Africa. By the fall of 1942 the war had turned on Germany (they were fighting on too many fronts)

The Allies Advance Starts with Germany being kicked out of North Africa in summer of 1942, next Germany lost a lot of ground in the USSR in Feb (surrendered in May 1943). Germany led by Rommel (desert fox) Allies led by George Scott PattonGeorge Scott Patton

The Allies Advance Allies start taking back land from Japan in the Summer of 1942 The plan was to capture Japan held islands in the Pacific Ocean from Hawaii all the way to Japan’s mainland.

The Last Years of the War In September of 1943 the Allies had taken over Italy and removed Mussolini from power. (Churchill called Italy the “soft underbelly” of Europe) Allies could not take over Rome for another year because Germany wanted to keep control of it so bad. In July of 1943 the USSR kicked out Germany for good, took over all their land in the Baltic’s by Jan 1945

The Last Years of the War On June 6, 1944 (D-Day) the Allies landed on the Beaches of Normandy, in order to take back western Europe. The Germans thought the Allies would attack somewhere else so they responded slowly to the invasion, thinking it was a diversion. The Allies landed two-million troops and a half million vehicles and were able to break through German lines.

The Last Years of the War From here the Allies moved South and East, joined with French resistance fighters. Paris was liberated August 1944 In March of 1945 the allies took over the Rhineland. The USSR marched into Berlin in Jan 1945 In January 1945 Hitler moved to a bunker in Berlin and blamed the war on the Jews and committed suicide on April

The war in Asia continued By the time that the U.S. neared the mainland of Japan, U.S. president Harry S Truman decided to drop atomic bombs on Japanese cities. He did not want to invade Japan, because the fear of losing thousands of men.

The war in Asia continued On August 6, 1945 a bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, three days later another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. The Japanese surrendered on August 14 By the time WW2 was over 17 million soldiers had died Counting civilians almost 50 million people died during the war.
