Movies Engineering Node Standards August 13, 2007

Outline Background Challenges Goals Plan Working group

Background At the Nov Management Council meeting, in response to an MC directive, a presentation was given on the issues involved in coming up with a standard for archiving movies In Jan. 2007, a working group was established to develop two SCRs, one for archiving movies as documents, and the other for archiving movies as data products. As of the beginning of May 2007, the SCRs were on hold, awaiting drivers and interested parties. In June 2007, the SCRs were revived. In July / August 2007, the working group was re-established, with additional membership.

Challenges Need to establish criteria to determine when a movie is a data product versus when it is a document or an “extra” Need to determine how to handle “flat ASCII text” requirement for documents Need to determine requirements for movie format –frame rate, sound, resolution, lossy vs. lossless, display support Need to develop criteria for what constitutes an acceptable format for archiving: (Is this a larger problem?) –documentation –data products Need to determine labeling requirements for new movie object –what information needs to be captured?

Goals For current users –make sure movies are easy to display with readily available software For future users –maximize chances that data will still be accessible and can be converted to then current formats For data providers –select commonly used formats with freely available support software for both encoding and decoding –establish label requirements that make sense and can be produced by an automated ground data system Maximize quality of data and minimize storage requirements

Plan Survey nodes, missions, and industry for requirements and for formats in common use; develop criteria for classifying individual movies as data products vs. documents (or “extras”) (Sep - Oct 2007) Submit “movies as documents” SCR to Technical Group (Nov 2007) Submit “movies as documents” SCR to MC (Dec 2007) Develop criteria for formats suitable for archiving; review formats for suitability for archiving; develop labeling requirements (Jan - Apr 2008) Submit “movies as data” SCR to TG (May 2008) Submit “movies as data” SCR to MC (summer 2008)
