History 4 Who wrote it? Francis Scott Key When was it written? September 14th, 1814 Where was it written? Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 Why was it written? Francis was inspired by the sights he saw during the battle and wrote lyrics to what became our National Anthem today. We sing this National Anthem in respect to our American Flag.
