The War of 1812-1815 (The American Revolution, Part II) Causes of War: British Impressment Northern shipping interests Greed for farmland

Major Battles

Who was Francis Scott Key? B.1779-D.1843. Maryland lawyer, amateur poet. During the war (1814) Key went on military mission to get P.O.W.’s released from English warship in Chesapeake Bay.

An Overnight Battle Inspires a Poem Key kept on ship overnight watched bombardment of Ft. McHenry by British cannons. Noticed US flag, 15 stars, through smoke filled night air. inspired him to write poem: “In Defence of Ft. McHenry.”

“In Defence of Fort McHenry” O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star spangled banner yet wave o’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_lCmBvYMRs

The Poem Becomes the US National Anthem The poem was set to the tune of the popular British drinking song "The Anacreontic Song” (1760’s), and became a well-known American patriotic song. Recognized for official use by the Navy in 1889 and President Wilson in 1916, and was made the national anthem by a Congressional resolution on March 3, 1931 (signed by President Hoover).

Interesting Sidenotes… A Spanish language recording of the "Star Spangled Banner" called “Nuestro Himno" was released on April 28, 2006, and was created as a show of support for all illegal immigrants in the United States in response to a proposed crackdown on illegal immigration. Performed as early as 1897 at baseball Opening Day ceremonies in Philadelphia and then at the Polo Grounds in NYC beginning in 1898. Played during the 7 th inning stretch of the 1918 World Series. Today, the anthem is performed before the beginning of all NBA, NHL, MLB, and NFL games, and NASCAR races.
