Performed as early as 1897 at baseball Opening Day ceremonies in Philadelphia and then at the Polo Grounds in NYC beginning in 1898. Played during the 7 th inning stretch of the 1918 World Series. Today, the anthem is performed before the beginning of all NBA, NHL, MLB, and NFL games, and NASCAR races.
