Try Lattice! d=86172&title=lattice_multiplication First, you draw a rectangle. Write your numbers across the top and down the right side. Draw in boxes so that each digit has it’s own box, and then you draw in diagonal lines that cut each box in half. Third, you multiply the digit on top with the digit on the right side. The ones place is placed under the diagonal line inside the box and the tens place is placed above the diagonal line. Now once you have multiplied each digit, you just add down the diagonal stripes... Start at the bottom and work your way up the stripes. We get our answer by reading down the left side and across the bottom. (Just ignore the first zero!)

Estimation Step Sheet  Phrases that tell you to estimate:  *Best estimate *About *Approximately  How to round and estimate:  1 st If you are doing an estimation problem, always round FIRST before you perform any operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication or division)  2 nd Ask: To what place am I rounding?  3 rd Underline the number in that place.  4 th Circle the number to the right of the underlined number: – the BOSS number *If the BOSS number is 0,1,2,3 or 4 it tells the underlined number to stay the same. *If the BOSS number is 5,6,7,8, or 9 it tells the underlined number to go up one. *Circling the boss number should remind you to turn it and all of the numbers after it to “0”.  5 th Don’t forget to bring down all the numbers to the left of the underlined number.  6 th Now you are ready to perform the operation.  7 th Does your answer make sense? Is it one of the answers given? If it doesn’t make sense or isn’t an option in your test, go back and round to a different place.

We have two different songs that you can use: “Area goes length and height, Multiply to get the inside. Perimeter goes round and round, Add them up and write them down!” “ Area, Area Throughout the whole middle. For rectangles, it’s base x height And your answer will always be right! Perimeter, Perimeter Goes around and around Add up all the sides and Then write your answer down.”

One way to remember is Ladder Division. Step 1: Read problem. This problem is read: “ 938 divided by 7.” (Think: How many 7’s in 938?) 938 ÷ 7 = Step 2: Put problem in ‘house’ format. This problem is read: “7 divided into 938.” (We still think: How many 7’s in 938?) Step 3: Think: 7 x _?_ = around 938? Think something easy like 1000, 100, or 10. Remember, your answer can’t be bigger than the number in the house. CIRCLE THE NUMBER YOU MULTIPLIED!! This is the most important step!! 7 x 100 = Step 4: Subtract your answer from 938. (938 – 700 = 238) 238 Step 5: Think: 7 x _?_ = around 238? CIRCLE THE NUMBER YOU MULTIPLIED!! 7 x 20 = Step 6: Subtract, again. 238 – 140 = Step 7: Think: 7 x _?_ = around 98? CIRCLE THE NUMBER YOU MULTIPLIED!! 7 x 10 = Step 8: Subtract, again = Step 9: Think: 7 x _?_ = 28? CIRCLE THE NUMBER YOU MULTIPLIED!! 7 x 4 = Step 10: Subtract, again. 28 – 28 = 0 0 Step 11: Add all the numbers you CIRCLED. This is your answer!! = 134 Note: Sometimes when you subtract at the end you don ’ t get zero. YOU ARE FINISHED WITH THE PROBLEM WHEN YOU SUBTRACT AND GET A NUMBER SMALLER THAN YOUR DIVISOR (in this problem, 7). Your leftovers are called ‘ REMAINDERS. ’ Ladder Division

Create a Fact and Opinion Whale cut-out so that students can sort out facts and opinions. Take a legal sized paper and turn it long ways Fold it three times On one end, cut off the two corners, giving the rounded shape of the whale’s head. On the other end, cut a triangle in the middle of the very end, and then cut a triangle on the top and bottom towards the end with the triangle cut-out Lastly, you open it up on the bottom two folds you write facts and opinions from the story you’re reading, and you color the front of your whale. Any questions – Look at the examples on the table…
