At the end of Tutorial 2 I gave you a problem to work on independently. Watch as I use LATTICE MULTIPLICATION to solve that problem.
3
Tutorial 2’s On Your Own Problem: 78 x 2 =
4
First, write the larger number down.
5
7 8
6
Draw a rectangle below this number.
7
7 8
8
The larger number is made up of 2 digits, so cut the rectangle into two boxes.
9
7 8
10
Write the other problem number on the right of the rectangle.
11
2 7 8
12
Cut the boxes diagonally. For each box draw a line from the bottom left to the top right.
13
2 7 8
14
Now we do basic multiplication. Start with the 7. If we go down from the 7 and across from the 2 they “meet” in that first box.
15
2 7 8
16
7 x 2 = 1 4 Write 1 in the top half of the box and write 4 in the bottom half of the box.
17
1 4 2 7 8
18
Move on to the 8. If we go down from the 8 and across from the 2 they “meet” in that second box.
19
2 7 8 1 4
20
8 x 2 = 1 6 Write 1 in the top half of the box and write 6 in the bottom half of the box.
21
1 4 1 6 2 7 8
22
Extend your diagonal lines down.
23
1 4 1 6 2 7 8
24
Add the numbers inside the boxes. Use the diagonal lines to guide you. Start on the right with the 6 then move to the left. 6 + nothing = 6. So put a 6 on the right of the diagonal lines.
25
1 4 1 6 2 7 8 6
26
1 + 4 = 5. So put a 5 between the diagonal lines.
27
1 4 1 6 2 7 8 6 5
28
1 + nothing = 1. So put a 1 to the left of the diagonal lines.
29
1 4 1 6 2 7 8 6 5 1
30
That’s it! 156 is your answer. 7 8 x 2 = 1 5 6

ON YOUR OWN Try the following problem using the rules from today’s work. The answer will be the first thing given in TUTORIAL 4.
