Making the right decisions in the lab If a laboratory fire erupts, immediately run for the fire extinguisher throw water on the fire open the windows notify your instructor You have been injured in the laboratory (cut, burn, etc.) First you should visit the school nurse after class apply first aid yourself see a doctor after school

Lab safety basics Report all accidents to your instructor - Wear goggles when working with glass, heat, or chemicals Report all accidents to your instructor Know location of emergency equipment Never taste, touch, or smell chemicals Keep your work area clean Follow all written and oral directions No Horseplay

Proper attire -Always wear close toed shoes -Always wear apron or lab coat -Wear safety goggles! No contact lenses. -Individuals with long hair should pull it back in a ponytail. Hair is flammable! -Wear gloves when necessary. -Never directly handle chemicals in liquid or solid form.

General Rules Always pour acids last to avoid splashing. Always be responsible while in the lab. Do not proceed if you do not understand. Ask the instructor. Do not touch chemicals, materials, or instruments until instructed to do so. NO FOOD, BEVERAGES, OR GUM IN LAB! NO HORSEPLAY OR DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR! Be prepared before entering lab.   Remain alert: notify instructor of any unsafe conditions or behavior. Check with teacher about proper disposal of chemicals. Pay close attention to labels and safety signs. Know locations of all safety equipment (fire extinguisher, first aid) Keep hands away from face, mouth, eyes, and body while handling chemicals. Report injuries, spills, or cuts immediately! Always pour acids last to avoid splashing.
