Student Learning Outcomes Reconsidered

Presentation Learning Outcomes - Bill Use a departmental process of creating student learning outcomes Define closing the loop of assessment Learn how to include students in creating a student learning outcomes culture

Survey the Room What’s your experience with SLOs?

Creating SLOs Think out –What do we / could we teach? Think up –What are our goals? –How do we fit into the division & university? Think down –What do our students want to learn? –What do our students wish they had learned?

Who to Assess All participants –Student Employees Student Leaders

Example SLO Communication –SA Skill 3 Part of RSS Communication Skills SLO –Defined by 3 rubrics: Written communication Verbal communication Non-verbal communication

Example Rubric CriterionUnsatisfactoryBasicProficientAdvanced Written Communication Is unclear or Uses style inappropriate for task. No attention given to necessary details. Style is acceptable but mistakes are evident. May not use all appropriate conventions for the style. All necessary conventions for the style are used without error. All necessary conventions for the style are used without error. Quality of written work is enhanced by additional conventions.

First Tool - Shaun Assess all SLOs (11) Using rubrics (24) Supervisor and self-reporting End of each semester

Sample Measure CriterionUnsatisfactory 1 2 Basic 3 4 Proficient 5 6 Advanced 7 8 Written Communication Is unclear or Uses style inappropriate for task. No attention given to necessary details. Style is acceptable but mistakes are evident. May not use all appropriate conventions for the style. All necessary conventions for the style are used without error. Closing the Loop

Results Points of Merit –Safety –Learned through recreation –Respect Points for Change –Promptness & Attendance –Communication –Healthy behaviors

Changes to Programming Awareness by supervisors Inclusion in program area development New sessions in Fall staff training Little improvement in scores

Changes to Assessment Low variance in scores Reporting bias Difficulty connecting to work Struggling to find new tools…

Writing an SLO - Jennifer __________ first year students, graduating seniors, WHO __________ participate in, complete THE FOLLOWING __________ activity, program, course WILL BE ABLE TO __________ identify, list, describe, discuss TO THE DEGREE OF __________ at least ¾, 70% accuracy, more/fewer than AS DEMONSTRATED BY __________ interview, observation, journaling, survey

Sample New SLO Communication –Students who are employed with RSS will learn interpersonal communication skills as demonstrated by the Queendom.com communications test. A student will score a 70 percent or higher on the test. We expect 80% of student employees to meet these criteria.

SLO Culture How the new SLOs are being integrated into our department. SLO Website
