EuCARD WP 7 – High Field Magnets Task 7.2 Status report EuCARD WP 7 – High Field Magnets Task 2 – Support studies Task 7.2 Status report EuCARD HFM collaboration meeting – PWR Wroclaw Dr. Jaroslaw Polinski, Prof. Maciej Chorowski Faculty of Mechanical and Power Engineering

Outline WP 7.2 Support Studies objectives 1st year plan Milestones and deliverables 1st year spending Progresses Planning – 2nd year plan Conclusions

Task 7.2 – Support Studies Sub–task Radiation resistance certification –Objectives: Magnets in accelerators like the upgraded LHC and neutrino factories be subjected to very high radiation doses. The electrical insulation employed on the coils need to be resistant to this radiation. A certification program for the radiation resistance is needed in parallel to the modelling efforts for such magnets Sub–task Thermal models and design. –Objectives: The same radiation is also depositing heat in the coils. The heat removal from the coils needs to be modelled. These models have to be supported with measurements. A thermal design of the dipole model coil can then be made.

Task st year plan

Task Milestones and deliverables Sub-task 2.1: Radiation resistance certification –Determination of radiation types and doses – IM3 (IM – Interim milestone) –Selection of the Institute capable of the irradiation– IM6 –Irradiated sample test set-up preparation – IM15 –Methodology for coil radiation resistance certification – M24 (M – Milestone) –Sample irradiation – IM23 –Irradiated sample tests – IM42 –Radiation resistance certification of the coil – D42 (D – deliverable) Sub-task 2.2: Thermal model and design –Selection of the insulation materials – IM3 –Preparation of the insulation materials sample – IM9 –Preliminary thermal model of the coil – M12 –Coil samples preparation – IM15 –Thermal characterisation of the insulation materials – IM18 –Thermal model of the coil – IM18 –Thermal model of the Nb 3 Sn dipole magnet – M24 –Thermal model of the Nb 3 Sn dipole magnet –D36

Task st year PWR spending

Task Progresses Sub–task Radiation resistance certification 1/2 –Determination of radiation types, doses and energy  Time scale: month 1-3 Action taken: –Mini Workshop of Accelerators Radiation at CERN –Regular Radiation Working Group meetings (4 so far) –Determination of irradiated sample tests scope Time scale: month 1-3 Action taken: –Review of literature concerns Nb3Sn coils insulation material exposed to radiation –Determination of a possible candidates for EuCARD dipole coil insulation –Radiation certification tests matrix preparation

Task Progresses Sub–task Radiation resistance certification 2/2 –Selection of the Institute capable of the irradiation Time scale: month 4-6 Action taken: –Mini Workshop of Accelerators Radiation at CERN –Visit in The Andrzej Sultan Institute for Nuclear Studies (IPJ) - Swierk (POLAND) –Irradiated sample test set-up preparation  Time scale: month 6 – 12 Action taken: –Review of literature concerns Nb3Sn coils insulation material exposed to radiation »Irradiation and test in cryogenic temperature in situ (no war up) »Irradiation in cryogenic temperature, warm up, and tests in cryo. temp. »Irradiation in room temperature and tests in cryogenic temperature

Task 7.2 – Progresses Sub–task Thermal models and design 1/2 –Selection of the insulation materials  Time scale: month 1-3 Action taken: –Determination of a possible candidates for EuCARD dipole coil insulation –Preparation of the insulation materials sample Time scale: month 4-9 Action taken: –CERN will purchase a insulation materials components and production will be ordered to RAL –Insulation material sheets thicknesses (for drum thermal tests) are preliminary defined, need to be confirmed by producer (RAL) –Thermal characterization of the insulation materials Time scale: month 7-18 Action taken: –The drum method for thermal characterization is selected –We are waiting for insulation materials sheets –CEA NED cryostat is repaired, PWR cryostat is ordered –6 sample holder/Institution is considered – to accelerate the thermal test program work

Task 7.2 – Progresses Sub–task Thermal models and design 2/2 –Coil samples preparation – has been found not necessary at this moment –Preliminary thermal model of the coil Time scale: month 7-18, M12 milestone „Preliminary thermal model of the coil” is needed Action taken: –Mini-Workshop on Thermal Modeling and Thermal Experiments for Accelerator Magnets – CERN 30th Sep – 1st Oct 2009 –Regular Thermal Working Group meetings (2 so far) –Modeling persons have been found: Bertrand Baudouy, Slawomir Pietrewicz (CEA Saclay), Ziemowit Malecha (PWR) –Bloc coil type magnet has been selected –Magnet materials are currently specifying –First boundary conditions are specified –RAL NED insulation material is preliminary accounted in the modeling

2nd year plan

Conclusions Last time an acceleration in the Task 7.2 work progress is observed, but some delays have been occurred The most critical issue for „today” - Milestone M12: „Preliminary thermal model of the coil” is needed There are still open questions concern the radiation certification sub-task Preparation of the EuCARD dipole production (Task 7.3) should be started as soon as possible –radiation certification can take a long time –for EuCARD dipole it is not necessary to wait for radiation certification results –the NED coil insulation can be used
