Let’s Warm Up Johnny’s mother has three children. The first child is April. The second son is May. What is the third child’s name? What was the tallest mountain in the world before Mt. Everest was discovered?

Comparison Comparative Forms We use -er for short words (one syllable): cheap→cheaper, fast→faster, large→larger, thin→thinner We also use -er for two syllable words that end in -y (-y→-ier): lucky→luckier, early→earlier easy→easier, pretty→prettier

We use more … for longer words (two syllables or more): more serious, more often more expensive, more comfortable We also use more … for adverbs that end in -ly: more slowly, more seriously more quietly, more carefully

Comparison Superlative Forms The superlative form is -est or most …. In general, we use -est for short words and most … for longer words. The rules are the same as those for the comparative: long→longest, hot→hottest, easy→easiest most famous, most boring, most difficult, most expensive
