Checking for Understanding Formative Assessments Adapted from AIE Conference 2014 (Thomas/Whitfield )

 We will recognize that checking for understanding is the link between teaching and learning and must be conducted during every lesson via research-based techniques.  I will complete a short kahoot.it to determine my level of understanding as it pertains to checking for understanding/formative assessment.

 What comes to mind when you hear the word ASSESSMENT ?

 Formative assessment are researched- based checks for understanding.  They help bridge the gap between “I taught it” and “Did they get it?”

Definition  Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course. Formative assessments help teachers identify the concepts that students are struggling to understand, skills they are having difficulty acquiring, or learning standards they have not yet achieved so that adjustments can be made to lessons, instructional techniques, and academic support. (Glossary of Education Reform 2014)
