Workshop on digital media, serious games and virtual worlds French implementation: Video of methods to learn

Context:  Secondary education  5 groups of students in 3 different vocational schools:  3 girls-only groups (15 girls each)  1mixed-gender group (13 girls, 2 boys)  1 boys-only group (9 boys)

Aims To support pupils in the transition from SE to HE by using video on “methods to learn”. Link Video of methods to learnVideo of methods to learn  Video are on five themes :  To work in groups  To manage time  To take notes and exploit them  Tools to help organisation  Organize to communicate

Improve transition To take notes and exploit them  First year of study in HE is different with SE  Large audience in big amphitheaters  Teachers don’t have time to repeat like in SE  They speak more quickly  Etc..  The video can help new students to better take notes  To avoid to be lost at the beginning of a course

Content of the Video To take notes and exploit them Lecture alternating with testimonial of students and self evaluation During the lecture a method is presented To capture relationships or identify major points from minor points To allow student to gather information from lectures or any other situation in order to complete their academic program

Content of the Video To take notes and exploit them  Cause teacher speaks as a rate as 2 or 3 words /second (120/180 words per minute and a student’s writing speed is about 30 words/minute ….  Use short and meaningful phrases, and abbreviate  Use meaningful symbols: arrows, dots, boxes, diagrams, charts, and other visual notes.

Content of the Video :To take notes and exploit them  For example during class, take notes in a left column, leaving a few lines between major points. Once class is over, add as much detail to the notes as possible.  After the lesson in the right column, write short descriptions, keywords, or questions that relate to the key points in the left column.

Content of the video : main goals  Create a system of note-taking that allows them to write quickly and get down basic concepts.  Share notes with others and make them legible and understandable to read them later.  Help them to quickly find information in their notes later.  Use their notes to make questions later.

Learn to learn competencies  Learn to learn competencies  Thinking, problem-solving and decision making  Motivation and confidence  Communication (Writing)  Self management  Other  To help student to reformulate and interpreted source information  To develop and to apply new knowledge  To develop initiative and proactive attitude  To manage and control his/her learning environment
