The Heian Period ( ) The Golden Age of Japan

Japanese Nobles Create Great Art The city of Heian was where the king lived in Japan. Nobles created a luxurious imperial court as advisors to the king in Heian. Nobles lived apart from the poor and enjoyed a simple life. Nobles of the court loved beauty and elegance. They had extravagant parties and enjoyed court music

Heian Fashion Period (write 2) Nobles wore intricately designed silk robes and gold jewelry. Women wore long gown made of 12 layers of colored silk. Nobles often carried fans painted with flowers, trees and birds. Women also…shaved their eyebrows, added red blush to cheeks, and painted teeth black. Women wanted a round facial appearance.

Fashion

Literature Lady Murasaki wrote The Tale of Genji, the worlds first and some believe the BEST novel The Tale of Genji is a story of a prince named Genji and his long quest for love. The book demonstrates what it would have been like as a wealthy court noble.

Visual Arts Most popular art during Heian period was calligraphy, painting, and architecture.

Architecture Style of Architecture: Wooden frame, curved slightly at the end Building were simple and airy in design

Zen Buddhism Zen—believes that neither faith nor good behavior led to wisdom, rather discipline meditation can lead to an “enlightened state” Satori-a flash (spiritual goal) is enlightenment through labor gardening and martial arts Samurai—warriors practiced this style of Buddhism because it practices physical and personal discipline

Heian Period Ends The imperial court is generally disconnected with the danger of the provinces. Court nobles, more interested in art and luxury did not govern, creating lawlessness and chaos in the provinces of Japan. The samurai Feudal Era begins
