School Related Gender Based Violence (SRGBV) Dana Comer ECD 540: GED Talk March 24, 2015

What is SRGBV? SRGBV “refers to acts of sexual, physical or psychological violence inflicted on children in and around schools because of stereotypes and roles or norms attributed to or expected of them because of their sex or gendered identity.” (Leach, 2014)

Let’s get to the FACTS! Reporting’s of 20%-30% for GBV in the US (California 45%, New York 40%) 246 million girls and boys experience SRGBV every year More prevalent among females by about half Regions ▫Sub-Saharan Africa: student and teacher sexual assault, sexual harassment and rape ▫Asia: rape and sexual abuse ▫Latin America/Caribbean: teacher-student rape and bullying ▫Middle East: psychological and physical violence ▫United States/Western Europe: bullying and dating violence, cyber-bullying, psychological violence and school shootings (Simister, 2012; UNGEI, 2015; UNGEI-UNESCO, 2013)
