The Catcher in the Rye By: Brad Hinton

J.D. Salinger - He was born on January 1st of July 16, 1951 "The Catcher in the Rye" was published. It became he huge success and was on New York Times Bestseller list for 30 weeks. - January 27th on 2010, he passed away reaching the age of 91.

Protagonist/Antagonist Holden Caulfield - Holden is a 16 year old - Finds himself being expelled from Pencey Prep - With all of his emotional issue's, he starts drinking and smoking at a young age. - Struggles to get along with many people; tends to think of everyone to be "phonies" - He struggles to make the transition from childhood to adulthood.

Favorite Character Holden Caufield - He speaks his mind in a colorful way. - He handles situations in ways a normal person wouldn't. - Acts on his impulses

Least Favorite Character Mr. Antolini - Friend and mentor to Holden, somebody that he could go to for help and advice. - Gives Holden a place to stay. - Holden awakes to Mr. Antolini petting his head..... CREEPY

Exposition - Holden had recently just been expelled for failing all of his classes except for English. - It happened right before Christmas break and he is too afraid to go home early because his parents are already sick of him getting kicked out of schools that they put him in. - From there he tries to figure out what to do until he is able to go home.

Rising Action - He gets in an argument with his roommate when he gets physical; so he leaves that night from Pencey. - Tries to connect back up with past friends. Goes on a date with a girl he used to have a crush on. Turned out bad! - A prostitute comes to his hotel room; he doesn't pay "enough" money to her; she later comes back to his room with her pimp, who beats him up, and takes all money that they thought he owed. - Sneaks home to be with his little sister Phoebe. They talk about life, his parents get home and he is forced to leave. - Heads over to Mr. Antolini's house for the night, wakes up to him petting his head so he leaves immediately.

Climax - He meets up with Phoebe to tell her that he is leaving for good, and that he won't be coming home. - She tries to leave with him, and gets upset when he refuses. She screams and yells and then ignores him and refuses to talk to him. - He decides to not leave to stay with her. - Later, when he takes her to the carousel, she asks him if he is really going, he indicates that he wants to stay there with her.

Falling Action - Right after he told his sister that he was staying. While watching her on the carousel he came to terms with what was important in life.

Resolution - Holden ends up going home. - Although he gets sick, he does plan to go back to school the following fall - He ends up missing everyone he talked about.

Setting - This book takes place in the late 1940's early 1950's - Pennsylvania where he is going to school, but once he gets expelled; he is forced to leave. - He heads up to New York where his family lives, and thats where the rest of the book takes place.

Teen Rebellion - Gets kicked out of Pencey Prep. - Although, only 16, he already has a smoking and drinking problem. - Struggles to become friends with people - Has a bad attitude towards most things.

Why? - Teenage Rebellion is an important issue, because if we can prevent the rebellion, then we wont have all of the social issue's that they bring with them and all the problems that the rebellion includes. - Also, this is important and an issue because in happens with almost all teenagers, some having greater problems, but none the less it happens with most teenager and it can be prevented to most terms.

What parents can do to help 1. Set Firm Rules - don't let the teenager feel like they are in control. Follow through with punishments. 2. Talk to them as Adults- growing up they don't want to be kids. Respect them as you would any other adult. 3. Stay Involved- have family time/ activity time. Do stuff that requires interaction. 4. Avoid Confrontation- makes teens want to rebel more. 5. Be Patient - the change can't happen over night. (McElwee)
