Online Services Junk where identical messages are sent to a number of recipients s that are sent to a large number of people who haven’t requested them An affiliate website is one that is attached to another company’s website via a link. The affiliate website receives a percentage of the revenue from customers clicking through from their website to the other company’s website

Online Documents This is when you move files from a system to your personal computer A mathematical step-by-step sequence used to work out calculations or carry out instructions A way of tracking changes to documents and making sure that you are working on the most-up-to-date version. Older versions of the document are kept as backup in case the most-up-to-date version is lost or becomes corrupt When a document is locked, you won’t be able to open it. It will only become unlocked once no users are accessing the document

Online Communication A virtual community which exists only online. It may be open to anyone or restricted by interest A group of people who jointly keep up-to- date contact online. This may be a specific network or it may be more general An online community which meets in a computer-generated world Short for internet etiquette or network etiquette. It is a set of conventions covering the use of networks used to interact with other people. The conventions are designed to prevent people causing annoyance or offence to others In this context, refers to any kind of real- time communication over the internet Large scale interactive conferencing with many people involved in the same convocation at the same time A user profile is a collection of personal data about a specific person

Cloud Computing This is when a computer uses services provided by another organisation’s computer systems A computer hardware system which acts as a host for other computers on the same network This is when a computer’s storage, access and retrieval facilities are hosted by another computer system The use of a wireless non-contact system that uses radio waves to transfer data from a tag attached to an object or person. The technology is mainly used for purposes of automatic identification and tracking

The Internet A group of computers that are connected together by communication channels and that have the capability of sending and/or receiving information between them Communications protocol is a set of rules that allows a computer system to connect with a different system to transfer data An Ethernet cable is used to connect a user to a network A way of measuring how much data can be carried over a network The amount of data transferred within a unit of time An access point to the internet. Normally, it is a location that contains all of the hardware that allows internet users access to the internet. An Internet Service Provider may operate several PoPs in their area to allow good access to the internet 2 nd Page

The Internet (Continued) An interchange between networks within the internet. It allows ISPs to interconnect with each other The protocol used to route packets of information across the internet. A packet is an individual unit of data that is carried across a network, including the internet. It is made up of a header which identifies the packet and a body which is the actual data message. It is one of the functions of the TCP to organise an internet message into packets The protocol that takes data from a user’s application program and passes it to the IP for transfer across the internet. The reverse operation is performed at the destination computer, where the TCP reassembles the data and forwards them to the user’s application program. The close relation of the TCP with the IP means that the terms are usually used in combination as TCP/IP A standard protocol that allows files to be transferred between two computers on a TCP-based network. It is commonly used to download programs to your computer from other servers and to upload web pages that you have created to the server that is hosting them on the internet 3 rd Page

The Internet (Continued 2) Direct connection to the internet would be very costly and so ISPs provide a cost effective gateway for people and organisations to get onto the internet. In the UK there are many ISPs-some of the most popular ISPs are BT (British Telecom), Virgin Media and Sky As well as providing a gateway to the internet, ISPs normally provide additional services such as . Many also provide web space for the development of websites, technical support and troubleshooting

Internet Infrastructure A computer or program that runs purely to serve the needs of other computers. It runs special server software to service the requirements of the users (clients). There are several types of servers, including file servers and printer servers on a local area network (LAN), and web and servers that manage communication with the internet A computer that uses the services provided by the server A piece of hardware that connects two or more networks. In relation to the internet, data from the ISP is sent into the network and the router then directs the data packets to the correct destinations. The router also handles data travelling in the other direction. Routers can be described as ‘directors of traffic’ for the networks The main connecting data routes between large networks on the internet and smaller networks in local regions

Internet Connection Methods Used by wireless-enabled devices (computers, mobiles, smartphones etc.) to log in to the internet. Wireless is exactly what it says; there are no wires to connect A wired connection to a broadband supplier. Normally the connection is via a network card in the computer. Cable users have an Ethernet connection from their computer to the network A wired connection via a conventional telephone line, which needs a modem to convert signals to and from analogue for transmission

Worldwide Web A link (which can be text or graphic) that takes you to another webpage or location within a document It is the job of a web server to deliver web pages to users’ computers A computer language used to create web pages A sequence of dialog boxes that lead the user through a series of well defined steps An individual component of an HTML document A ‘search and find’ system into which you type what you are looking for and a series of ‘best match’ results will then be displayed A unique string of characters that makes up a web page’s address
