The European Day of Languages

 The European day of languages was created in 2001 by the European Union and the Council of Europe of Strasbourg.  It is celebrated on September 26, and concerns millions of people. There are 45 countries involved.  It was made to diversify the languages learnt in Europe and to prove their utility.

 Foreign languages are used more and more in everyday life, especially at work.  There are more than 200 European languages, so English is just not enough.  Learning languages help to understand each other a lot better, and it helps to overcome cultural differences.

 There are about 225 different languages in Europe, which is 3% of the world total. A language contains about words but only a few hundred are commonly used.  There are 3 groups which contain all of the European languages: ► Germanic, such as German, Dutch, English, Yddish, etc… ► Romano, like French, Spanish, Portuguese, etc... ► Slavic, Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian…

 First, you have an idea, such as a game, a tournament, a European Café… You set up your event… But nobody knows about it!  Then, you go to the EDL’s site, and enter your event in the calendar, and talk about it on newspapers, etc. Now people know it will happen!  Your event’s ready! Lou
