Revision These sessions will help you to revise for your Year 9 exam. It may give you new information or just reinforce what you have already done in the classroom. Remember you haven’t done all the projects yet so you won’t know everything which is why this is so important. You need to read all the information and use all links and videos so that you have a better understanding of each topic. The first topic is based on properties of materials and researching into different types of plastics.

Session 1 (60mins) Properties OR Working Characteristics Below is a list of properties that certain Materials have:  Hardness  Toughness  Brittle  Elasticity  Flexible  Impact resistance  Ductility  Malleability Task: Find out what each word means and write a definition for each one. Elasticity Hardness Flexible Brittle

Plastic Properties ThermosettingThemoplastic Urea Formaldehyde (UF): Urea Formaldehyde has physical properties of high hardness and high toughness, making it suitable for strong, knock-resistant electrical fittings. It is also scratch resistant and a very good electrical insulator, making electrical fittings manufactured from this safe to use. Acrylic. (Known also as PERSPEX) This is the most common plastic in a school workshop. It is purchased usually in the form of sheets and comes in a range of colours. It can be translucent (e.g. smoked), transparent or opaque. It is resistant to most acids and weather conditions. Using this link, find out about the two types of plastics, thermosetting and thermoplastic. In the exam it will ask you to name specific materials and their properties. You will need to remember a couple of plastics from each category for the exam. Task: Complete the table below so that you have three examples of each type of plastic. Then complete a mind map showing this information. The next slide shows you how to mind map. How will you remember the plastics and their properties?

Mind mapping Mind Maps appeal to your senses with their visual elements – images, branch colours and curved branches all add emphasis and ensure that you will remember your notes! By noting down only key words, you save vital time while studying. Also, when you go on to write essays or study for exams from your Mind Maps, you will recall the most important information. You generate ideas simply through making your Mind Map. Your brain actively makes links between ideas, adds connections, puts thoughts in order and generates further creative ideas. Your brain responds to Mind Mapping as it replicates the natural thinking process, so you will find your ideas simply flow onto the page, making studying more enjoyable and more fun!
