Effective learning Effective REVISING Think about all the different ways you learn? They all have one thing in common. They link with something you already knew, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4np5wLAhWw

Objectives of the lesson Everyone has a clear understanding of how we learn Everyone has a clear understanding of how to revise effectively and have a strategy for improving. 1.List and explain to your gran (if she was here!) how we learn 2. You can explain the forgetting curve 3. Create a list (on your own, in silence, three action points you can put into practise that will improve on your current strategy)

In pairs/ with a partner list as many ways as possible how we learn things We learn best when we take responsibility for our own learning What do you think this quotation really means ?

1.you need to be honest with your self Are you learning the material or not ??????? You may be spending time reading etc. BUT IS IT GOING INTO YOUR BRAIN ? How do you know?? Can you explain the topic to someone else so that they would understand it?

2. Start early The benefits are massive because you get the chance to revisit and embed. You can get into study habits, find out what works for you. Get things organised and avoid the STRESS because when you stress you will not be able to learn. LEAVING REVISION TO THE LAST MINUTE IS A DISASTER AVOID leaving revision to the last minute.

3. Engage with your learning in the classroom. What does this mean in reality? Pay attention show interest – look at the teacher Fake it for a while it will become a habit eventually. Ask or think up questions Try this – teachers pick up on this and give you more feedback AND FEEDBACK IS THE ROCKET FUEL FOR IMPROVEMENT Be serious about this, I mean very serious about it.

4.Teach someone This is the best way to learn because your brain has a different way of learning when you are teaching someone, better than if you were learning the material for a test. Matthew Lieberman -world authority on the brain and learning has spent years researching this.

5. Study often Understand the forgetting curve, IT IS VITAL IN REVISION We forget very quickly and need to get exposed to the material again very soon after ( day later) then review again (three days later) The level of retention is hugely increased.

AWESOME STUFF

You will be amazed at what you can achieve by practice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aREc7fcUhrc Purposeful practice – with proper feedback

6.Self evaluate What does this mean? Test yourself –practice tests, do essays, in the exam you may have to work for two hours solid – try this at home- in exam conditions. Set yourself test by creating a test on your phone. BE CLEAR ABOUT WHAT YOU KNOW AND WHAT YOU DON’T We all practise what we are good at – because the brain gets positive feedback- DO NOT CON YOURSELF.``

7.Learning in different ways Not just your so called preferred learning style Post it notes Doodles Revision cards Mind Maps

MIND MAPS Our brain likes colour, images, unusual things and links The creative idea behind thinking of an image helps learning- seeing the image helps to reinforce the learning –A DOUBLE LEARNING WINNER http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UCXalYcoko

8.Take a break 30 mins working then 10 mins break – fresh air and a little exercise ( drink water ) our brain is most receptive to learning after exercise. Beginning middle end. We learn most at the start of a session (when all is fresh)and at the end (when the latest thing has been revised)

9.Have fun Work with others make learning enjoyable – make a video of yourself Build in a few rewards- what gets rewarded get repeated.

10.Set goals and stick to your plans Push through despite set back Be tough on yourself – it is only for a short time
