School Finance Division School Transportation Unit SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION OVERVIEW FOR CSI SCHOOLS December 2015

 Due to finances and the need to pay for facilities out of operating revenue, many charter schools do not provide bus transportation for students. Parents often organize car pools to provide transportation. Public transportation is used in some areas when it is available. Some charter schools do agreements with their school district for bus service. Whenever this is done, the agreement is in the written charter/contract.  See more at: Transportation to charter schools 2

 Options  Local district provides transportation  Contract with outside company  Charter school provides transportation  Parents provide transportation School Transportation 3

 A charter school is accountable to the families in the school, the local school district or Charter School Institute, and the state. The charter school authorizer sponsors the charter school and, through a contract, has outlined certain provisions the charter school is responsible to fulfill.  The charter application submitted to CSI must speak to transportation elements. Charters are not required to provide transportation, but if they do they need to be compliant to the relevant state statutes/rules, as well as any federal requirements. CRS (1)(m). Charter School Responsibilities 4

  If a charter school's charter or contract includes provision of transportation services by the school district, the charter school and the school district shall collaborate in developing a transportation plan to use school district equipment to transport students enrolled in the charter school to and from the charter school and their homes and to and from the charter school and any extracurricular activities. The transportation plan may include, but need not be limited to, development of bus routes and plans for sharing the use of school district equipment for the benefit of students enrolled in charter schools of the school district and students enrolled in other schools of the school district. –  See more at: Charter School Transportation Plans 5
