How do you know where you’re going ? If you were going somewhere, you might type the name of the place or address into the computer to get a map You might call someone on the phone

Then, how would you know where you were going ? What if there were no computers What if there were no phones

How people found their way Our ancestors were observant. They’d notice huge rocks at the end of the 1 st day ….

How people found their way If it was an 8-day journey, they would know they were 1/8 of the way home

But wait …. Do you think

… markers will be exactly spread out on the trail ?

I don’t think that will happen

Probably, landmarks will be different distances apart

Why not think of it as 1/2 ? =

Say, you have a horse … To get to from where you are camped to the river takes 12 days

These are new rocks On day 1 of your trip, you see three rocks

After 4 days, you see a small lake

After 6 days, you see a huge clump of bushes

After 10 days, you see a bigger lake, with trees around it

You might look at it like this OR

After 4 days, you are 1/3 of the way to the river 1

=

After 6 days, you are 1/2 of the way to the river 1

=

After 10 days, you are 5/6 of the way to the river 1

=

By understanding fractions

I’m not lost

Hurray, I’m almost to the river!

Where to go next? If you are not sure why 1/3 = 4/12 or 10/12 = 5/6, you’ll want to read the pages on equivalent fractions.
