4 The Pact What did Carla do to help Sam? Have you ever had a friend who helped you like Carla helped Sam? What did that feel like? Do you think Carla’s help made a difference in Sam’s life? How?

5 Empathy What does it take to empathize with someone? Do you think Carla empathized with Sam? How do you know? Have you ever felt like someone empathized with you? How did that feel?

6 Empathy How could reflecting feelings help someone solve a problem? Can you remember a time when someone reflected your feelings back to you? Was that helpful to you? How and why?

7 Reflecting Feelings Sentence-Starters It sounds like you’re feeling __________. It that right? If I were in your shoes, I’d be feeling _______. How do you feel? It sounds like that made you feel ________. Would I be right to say that? If it happened to me, I’d probably feel _______. Is that how you feel? Did that make you feel __________? Something like that happened to me once, and I felt _________. Is that how you feel right now? I’m not sure, but it sounds like you’re feeling _________. Is that right?

8 The Pact What’s just happened to Sam? Have you ever failed a big, important test? How did you feel about it? How do you think Sam feels about it? What does it sound like Sam is feeling here? If your friend just told you he had failed a big test, what might you say to him to show empathy?

10 Reflection Why is empathy important? Do you have to have experienced something yourself to empathize with someone about it? What could you say if you really have no idea how someone was feeling?
