Service Learning Presentation Pine Ridge Bible Camp & Conference Center By Amy Roelse

Agency Description Pine Ridge Bible Camp & Conference Center is…  A non-profit Christian camp and retreat ministry located near Grand Rapids, Michigan  A place where children, youth, and special needs campers can all enjoy life impacting experiences through residential summer camp sessions  A camp that offers day camp sessions for young kids, retreat options, family camps, and facility rentals for church and other groups  One of the few Christian camping programs in Michigan that ministers specifically to the mentally challenged Pine Ridge Bible Camp & Conference Center. (2015) Website.

Volunteer Role Description My volunteer role as one of the camp nurses during their special needs weeks for mentally challenged campers included…  Applying the nursing process  Medication administration  Allergy, asthma, diabetes, and seizure monitoring and managing  Assisting the campers with their activities of daily living  Administering first aid as needed  Communicating with staff and campers’ parents/guardians

Critical Reflection Upon critical reflection, I have learned mentally challenged children and adults have the desire and the need to…  Have fun at camp  Live a fulfilled life  Receive and give love  Have a purpose in life  Build friendships and relationships  Give of themselves and help others

Synthesis This service learning project has helped me understand…  The importance of giving of ourselves to others and serving others by volunteering in our communities  The importance of this project in this nursing program  How this project helps us meet the required outcomes for this program  Reinforces our passion for helping and serving others Doerr, J. (2015). Nursing Capstone Syllabus. Big Rapids, MI: Ferris State University.

Recommendations I highly recommend this service learning project for…  Future nursing students in this program who are looking for a fulfilling and rewarding service learning project  For any registered nurse that loves working with our special needs population and enjoys being outdoors in the summer time.

Conclusion My conclusion is…  I believe this service learning project has made me a better nurse and person by opening my eyes, my heart, and my mind to the challenges of special needs children and adults.  I believe this project helped me understand what these individuals’ lives are like and what their families’ lives are like and this has made me a more compassionate and sensitive nurse and person.
