A. Baldini PSI July 05 Overview of the experiment MEG is being built (Beam line, Magnet, LXe, DC, TC, Elect., Software) Delays in some items: O(months) We keep the deadline of starting data taking when the beam will start on 2006

A. Baldini PSI July 05 Collaboration: construction responsibilities unchanged Spokespersons: T.Mori, A.Baldini Technical Coordinator: S.Ritt Detectors: Beam line:PSIP.-R.Kettle COBRA:KEK/TokyoW.Ootani Drift Chamber:PSIJ.Egger Timing Counter:Genova/Pavia/Roma Cecchet/Gatti Photon Detector:Tokyo/Pisa/KEKS.Mihara Trigger:PisaM.Grassi DAQ/Elec.:PSIS.Ritt Offline:C.Gatto/S.Yamada/F.Cei + UCI (W. Molzon)

A. Baldini PSI July 05 Beam line: PSI Dear colleagues! BTS progress report for morning - replace the Helium transfer line 11:00 - the Helium temperature is achieved, coil is superconducting but Helium dewar is empty 13:20 - receive full Helium dewar 15:30 - the BTS cryostat is full 16:20 - ramp up current up to 30A, the field in BTS is observed by deflection of steel screw, which hangs on wire at cryostat edge... - test and adjust quench protection circuit 20:00 - the current of 283 A is reached The maximal current is limited by power the supply maximal voltage and the power cable resistance now. The BTS was tested up to 300 A at Novosibirsk with another power supply. with best regards, Dima

A. Baldini PSI July 05 Beam line: separator almost ready, experimental area more and more crowded (platform, COBRA barrack...)

A. Baldini PSI July 05 COBRA mag. field measurements and comparison with calculations going on

A. Baldini PSI July 05 LXe calorimeter Liquid phase purification successfully tested PMT base modifications tested: Ok 110 PMTtested at Pisa (rate of about 3/day) starting at PSI Delay in cryostat construction (3 months): bureaucracy + steel property With Filter, no noise observed, narrow pedestal

A. Baldini PSI July 05 Drift chambers Detailed measurements of geometry during construction: procedure to get the final values and to check tools being established Timing counter APDs received OK Mechanical drawing of the transverse part almost finished Final desig of the TC electronics (long. + tansverse) almost ready He bag being studied

A. Baldini PSI July 05 Calibrations MEG TN027 Proton accelerator: int. on Li target (17.6 MeV  ): 50% financing from INFN: 250 K€: how to get the rest ??  calibration: new possibility (could be used to calibrate the DC system too) alphas + neutrons on Ni update

A. Baldini PSI July 05 Electronics Trigger: the test of the final boards wil be done in September, as foreseen in the schedule. On schedule DRS: temperature dependence to be kept under control. DRS3 available in 2006 will substitute DRS2 Software MC status (BG simulation going on) DATA storage and CPU estimates

A. Baldini PSI July 05 No change in the expected sensitivity since last february We consider LHC as our competitor We will try to get “significant” results ASAP
