EDU BOF IESG Plenary – IETF57, Vienna Margaret Wasserman

EDU BOF Summary Purpose Community visibility and feedback on current efforts Reach consensus on how to move forward Scope of Effort Internal IETF training Focused on process and role education Help people come up-to-speed faster, be more effective Currently have some training and educational resources for participants and WG chairs – we need to keep doing this! Plans to expand efforts to include editor education and resources for non-North American participants

Moving Forward Not quite like a WG or a directorate… Consensus to form an Education team Has responsibility and authority to manage the IETF's internal training efforts Reports to the General AD, who selects a chair Chair selects team members from volunteers Visibility achieved through web presence, discussion list, open archives and occasional IETF BOFs More details to follow… Formal charter for the group Mailing list for discussion, and opportunities to volunteer

IMPROVE IESG Plenary – IETF 57, Vienna Margaret Wasserman

To Resolve Some Problems Mission and Goals IETF participants don't have a common understanding of our mission Standards Track Three stage standards process is not properly utilized Management Model The IETF has difficulty handling large and/or complex problems The IETF management structure is not properly matched to the current size and complexity of the IETF

…Will Take Time Fixing these problems may require significant changes to fundamental IETF organizational structures and processes Need widespread review and IETF consensus Need to proceed carefully, to avoid disrupting current work and destroying the many good things about the IETF BUT, we DO need to proceed… How?

IMPROVE WG Proposal Problem WG process document proposes a single WG to pursue all three improvements Two phase approach Phase One: Determine our mission, values, scope and goals Develop metrics for success Phase Two: Change our organization structure and standards track processes to allow us to achieve our mission and goals without compromising our values

WG Reaction This proposal was not embraced by the WG Concerns about process overhead Not clear that a large WG is an effective way to meet these goals So, what are the alternatives?

Mission and Goals Focused WG? Ask the leaders to articulate the mission, values, scope and goals of the IETF? Published in written form (Internet-Draft => RFC) Reviewed and ratified by the community

Management Model Focused WG? Blue ribbon panel/design team? Chosen in some representative fashion Solicits proposals and input from the community Develops a recommendation to reform our management model Recommendation is reviewed and ratified by the community

Standards Track Focused WG? Could strart with proposals already under discussion on the solutions mailing list

How do we proceed? We've identifying a pressing need for improvement in these three areas Mission & Goals, Standards Track and Management Model How should we structure and execute efforts to improve in these areas? Let's decide soon, so that we can begin work on the solutions to our problems
