Making an Electromagnet Mr. Ahearn 2010

What’s an Electromagnet? The basic idea behind an electromagnet is extremely simple: By running electric current through a wire, you can create a magnetic field.

Problem 1.Can the strength of an electromagnet be changed by changing the amount of wire wrapped around its core? 2.Can the strength of an electromagnet be changed by changing the voltage of the power source?

Materials Insulated Wire steal nail D-cell battery Paper clips

Procedure 1.Wrap a wire around a steel nail 10x. Connect one end of the wire to a D- battery (leave the other end loose) 2.Connect the wire. Observe how many paper clips you can pick up with the magnet. 3.Disconnect the wire and rewrap the nail with 20 coils. 4.Connect the wire and observe how many paper clips you can pick up. 5.Disconnect the wire.

Analysis Procedure-A 1.How many paper clips did you pick up each time? Did more coils make the electromagnet stronger or weaker? 2.Graph the number of coils versus number of paper clips attracted. Predict how many paper clips would be picked up with 5 coils and 15 coils.

Analysis Procedure-B 1.How many paper clips did you pick up each time? Did more volts make the electromagnet stronger or weaker? 2.Graph the voltage versus number of paper clips attracted. Predict how many paper clips would be picked up with.5 volts and 2.5 volts.
