What’s the Matter? Science Lesson by Mrs. Watson

What is it? Matter is anything that: 1.Has mass, and 2.Takes up space.

Element An element is matter made up of only one “ingredient”. All of the elements are listed in a diagram called the Periodic Table. Most elements are made in nature. Some examples of elements are: hydrogen, oxygen, & carbon.

Two or More “Ingredients” Together Compound 2 or more ingredients Can not be easily separated Examples include cake, water, a piece of wood, a sheet of paper Mixture 2 or more ingredients Can EASILY be separated Examples include a salad, trail mix, cereal in milk, a bag of M & M’s

Two or More “Ingredients” Together Compound Mixture

Observable Properties Properties are characteristics we use to identify something. Observable means that we can discover these properties by either using our senses or through measuring. Observable properties include: color, texture, size, weight, taste, smell, and sound.
