Naming the Pieces Stack the black piece on one of the pegs. This is one whole. Stack the two orange pieces on the peg. The orange pieces are the whole cut into two equal parts. The name of the orange piece is one half. Stack the green pieces next to the orange. The green pieces are the whole cut into three equal parts. Each green piece is one third. Place the other colors on the pegs and name the pieces.

Naming the Pieces What name do we give to two green pieces? Why? Six yellow? 5 blue?

Equivalent Fractions Stack one orange piece on a peg. Can you find two pieces of another color that will fill as much of the peg as one half does? Two purple pieces are equivalent to one orange. ½ = 2/4 Find other fractions that are equivalent to ½. What are other fractions can you find that are equivalent to each other?

Comparing Fractions Stack one orange piece on the middle peg. How many fractions can you find that are greater than one half? How many fractions can you find that are less than one half?
