Session 5: What can I discover about Space and Engineering? Research Project and Robot Design

Session Aims Understand why Engineering in space is important To find key talking points for the three possible research topics Research one of the three topics for the EEP competition Be able to create an informative poster about the topic and present the research findings

Asking NASA Scientists - Why Engineering?

Possible Projects 1) What do humans need to survive and create a colony in space? 2) How can you generate energy to support a human outpost? 3) How can robots help humans explore? Focus for each topic: –Human body –Environment –Factors needed to sustain life –Science experiments

What do humans need to survive and create a colony in space? Where would your food come from? What do your bodies need to survive? What happens when you get sick? What is known about space? What everyday objects may help you survive in space?

How can you generate energy to support a human outpost? In space, what do we need energy for? How do we heat our houses and which methods can we use in space? How do we store food and which methods can we use in space? How can a space station in a space location be powered? How can we create energy and use it at the chosen destination?

Your Task Create a poster and present your thoughts, notes and initial research findings on your assigned topic. You will display your findings in a portfolio at the competition. At the competition, you will have 5 minutes to talk about your research and findings to some STEM volunteers. You can use PowerPoint slides, create a song or jingle and bring any props. Make it fun and enjoyable! This accounts for ¼ of your overall marks.

Possible Structure 1.Research title 2.Introduce the team 3.Team Mission Statement 4.Topic of Presentation 5.Why you chose this Topic 6.Your resource/What is the Problem? 7.Your findings/What are the Solutions? 8.What is the your Recommendation? 9.Describe some diagrams/show a video/show a model or prototype 10.List where you got your information and research from 11.State your top three learning points
