An Oral History Interview Things to Consider

Why is this chapter important?  An interview directly transfers information or knowledge to the you, the student. You have the opportunity to ask questions that you want to ask.  The main point of this chapter is to give you the chance to learn something new about your family history.  Talking to someone who ‘lived through it’ is very different than reading about someone who did!

Closed questions  They result in very specific, often fact driven responses.  They are helpful in gathering info, but do not often bring out the ‘stories’ that are interesting to write about.  Was your family poor when you were a child?  Did you go to school until you were a senior?

Open ended questions  They give you a lot of detail.  They often result in interesting twists and turns that might seem like they take you off topic, but that’s okay! Use this chance to ask follow up questions! Describe the type of Christmas gifts you received from your parents. Why do you think those memories stand out?

Steps for Interviewing  Make time. Expect it to last longer than you think it will.  Share with them what your essay is supposed to be about.  Thank them for taking the time to speak with you.  Give them your attention. Listen, then write— or better yet, record it all!  Thank them again! Also, ASK for clarification when you forget something, or don’t understand!
