1 Why did immigrants settle in the United States? Immigrants came in search of better jobs, freedom, food, and better life. Immigrants were faced with low pay, crowded conditions, prejudice, hard work and long hours. Asian Immigrants Came through Angel Island in San Francisco. Many were forced to return to home countries. European Immigrants Came through Ellis Island in New York Almost all were allowed to entered the U.S.

2 The United States factories were producing jobs, but the working conditions were tough. Sweatshops Child Labor Long hours, low pay, and often dangerous working conditions.
