To ensure the safety and health of everyone on your farm you need to:  Acknowledge that there are risks and make a commitment to change. You can do this by putting your commitment to safety and health in writing, setting a good example, laying out clear expectations, keeping communication open and taking immediate action to deal with concerns.  Make sure you have accurate information on operating procedures, chemical handling, livestock handling.  Communicate to everyone working on your farm about the potential risks, and ensure all workers understand and are capable of doing the tasks assigned to them. This will involve training workers.  Identify and control any hazards on your farm. This means doing an inspection of your farm and taking action to correct any hazards.

 Humans tend to learn and remember based on their involvement.  It is not enough to give verbal instructions and expect that a worker will understand and remember when it comes time to do the task. A learner tends to remember:  20% of what they hear (your verbal instructions)  30% of what they see (while they watch the task demonstrated)  50% of what they see and hear (having the task explained and demonstrated at the same time)  70% of what they say (verbally repeating steps of the task)  90% of what they say and do (telling you the steps while performing the task themselves)

Farm Safety Elements of the EMP 1. Risk assessments - increase personal safety 2. Contact lists - vital information at a glance 3. Site plan – information at your fingertips 4. Standard Operating Procedures – have personal safety built in 5. Planning for Infrastructure disruptions

Increase personal safety by identifying the hazards so the risk can be reduced or eliminated by: adding precautions adding control measures or eliminating the risk

 machinery  equipment  animal handling – procedures & equipment  potential human interventions  working alone  working in remote locations

 provide critical information at a glance  may be difficult to remember information during an emergency post by telephone i. Farm civic address ii. List of second farm sites, outlying pastures, etc. iii. Owner’s contact information iv. Information for alternate contact person (Manager, spouse, etc.)

Primary Farm Site Business Name: Civic Address: Legal Land Descriptions: City: Province: Postal Code: Telephone Number: Fax Number Cell Number Do you have an alternate farm site?  Yes  No Alternate farm site civic address:

 drawing /sketch to show key farm components  provides critical information at a glance  may be difficult to remember information during an emergency or owner may not be available ensure employees aware of location of site plan update regularly

i. all buildings and their function ii. water sources, ponds, rivers, etc. iii. pasture areas iv. hazardous material storage (diesel fuel, fertilizers, pesticides, propane tanks, etc.) v. farm access roads

written instructions on how to perform a task ensure a desired outcome can be delivered with fewer problems and unforeseen complications can also be defined as the most efficient (least amount of effort) and effective (best results) way of accomplishing a task have a level of personal safety built in (part of Canadian Quality Milk On-Farm Food Safety Program )

Records and Document Backup Critical records and documents are those which are essential for continuity of essential farm operations. There should be one official set and one backup set. Only one person should have the responsibility for maintaining the official set and the backup set of records and documents. The person responsible for maintaining and backing up the critical records and documents is

 site maps  insurance policies  bank account records  computer records  payroll records  accounting records  an inventory of essential records and documents

The official documents and records are stored in the following In office location(s): __________________. The backup set of records and documents are stored in the following out of office location(s):__________. Computer Passwords and Log In Information Computer passwords and Log In information for this farm are known by and.

 well thought out, written document providing direction to prevent, to be prepared for, to respond to and to recover from an emergency – at the personal level or the industry level  includes many elements of personal safety as safety starts at home with the individual

 Make a list of all emergency numbers and put them by all phones.  Make sure there are clear and very good instructions to your farmstead including the land description.  Identify safety hazards on your farm.  Ex: If a guard is off, fix it.  Check to see there are accessible fire extinguishers in various locations and in the house.  Put safety decals on chemical storage doors, grain bins, etc..

 Never ride in the back of a pickup truck or on the fender of a tractor.  Never get on a tractor as an extra rider.  Stay out of the path of moving equipment.  Don't use electric power tools without adult supervision, proper training and always use protective equipment like gloves and goggles.  Farm Safety Quiz Farm Safety Quiz

 Equipment operators cannot always hear what others are saying to them.  Hand signals are used to communicate when you can’t hear each other.  The 'Universal Language‘ - the hand signals used by all farms should be the sameThe 'Universal Language‘  Interactive

 One of the greatest things about farms is how many different kinds of animals are there — like pigs, cows, horses, sheep, and chickens.  But these animals are different from dogs, cats, or other house pets.  Farm animals are often bigger (horses and cows, for instance), and whether they are big or small, they may not be friendly to people.  A horse might kick you, for instance.  All farm animals need to be treated with respect and care.

 When you are around farm animals, be calm, move slowly, avoid making sudden jerks or movements, and always approach them from the front so they can see what you are doing.  Don't scream or run around them because it will upset them.

 A mother with her young will be protective and she may attack anyone who comes close.  Always wear a helmet and other protective gear when riding a horse.  If you want to approach an animal, ask someone who knows the animal to approach it with you. The animal will be less nervous and less likely to become upset.

 And after you've been around farm animals, be sure to wash your hands with warm water and soap.  Animals can carry germs that cause infections.germs  If you get those germs on your hands and then touch your mouth or eyes, you might get sick.

 In addition to all the temptations of equipment and animals, farms may have a barn or storage areas separate from the house.  They may seem like great places to explore — but you need to be careful there, too.  It's easy to fall from ladders and lofts in barns and storage areas.  Storage areas should be locked to keep out kids and other people who shouldn't be there.  Never ride on a grain wagon or enter a silo or grain bin. It's easy to be trapped by flowing grain, and the closed storage areas can fill in seconds and lead to suffocation.

 Manure (the excrement, or poop, of livestock) is often used on farms as fertilizer for the soil.  Although many people consider it to be safer than chemical fertilizers, in large quantities and in enclosed spaces manure can produce deadly gases.

 Sometimes, even if you follow all the rules, there can be an accident.  Knowing what to do in an emergency can save someone's life.  Ask about learning CPR.CPR  If CPR classes are available in your community, you should be sure to learn these life-saving skills.

 Turn off the equipment right away (if it is safe to do so) and call for help.  Call 911 or your local emergency number to get assistance.911  Be ready to tell the person who answers what the problem is and exactly where the accident happened.  Stay on the line until the operator tells you it is OK to hang up.  Don't move the person by yourself unless he or she is in danger and you won't get hurt doing so. The person might have a head or neck injury, and moving him or her can make these injuries worse.

 Don't approach the angry animal. Call out for help right away.  Don't move the person by yourself unless he or she is in danger and you won't get hurt while moving the person.

 If someone gets hurt by a chemical or other substance, call the poison control center or 911, if necessary.  By knowing farm safety rules, you can protect yourself, your friends, and family on the farm.
